My BA flight from LHR to Turin was cancelled, and they suggest I take a flight to Milan instead. Arriving MXP at 6pm, would it be best to take the train or bus to Turin? From there I will need to get a taxi. Is the train fairly easy/safe? Thanks!
The above post is wrong. Take the direct MXP-Turin bus.
As you can see on any mapping site, MXP is halfway between Turin and Milan.
Unfortunately the airport train goes only to Milan: you'd backtrack for 50 minutes before getting on a train to Turin that runs next to MXP.
Don't know how a train can be unsafe at 6 PM, especially because after 7 PM you'll be travelling with hundreds of thousands of commuters.
It is likely you would not arrive at your lodging/destination in Turin until 10PM or later.
Is that a problem?
Is LHR your origin, or a transit point?
If you cannot find a flight to Turin and the 6PM arrival in Milan is your only option, you may want to consider spending the night in Milan,
Can you get to Genoa earlier than the 6PM Milan arrival time?
Thanks for the quick responses!
I am travelling in April, but need to confirm the flight soon. I am originating from SFO, transit in LHR. I guess another option is to spend the night in London and then book my flight on different airline to Turin. However, it seems no direct flights.
If you can take the Arriva Bus departing at 19:35, you'll be in downtown Turin at 21:35. No European city is unsafe at dinner time, You just have to cross the street from the bus depot and get on the first cab in line.
Sleeping at MXP could be cheaper than taking a train to Milan and then another one to Turin.
By train Genova is 2 hours away from Turin, same as the MXP-Turin bus, but there is the time needed to go from Genoa's Airport to the closest station etc.
Thank you !
Besides Trenitalia, Italo also has trains to Turin. I've traveled with both companies betweem Milan and Turin.
But I agree, from Malpensa, take the bus.
As others have said, take the bus direct from the airport. Don’t bother with backtracking by taking the train.
As it looks like BA would owe you a full refund, why not check UA/Lufthansa. It looks like they have one stop service via Frankfurt, to Turin
And don’t think of spending a night in London, as you would have to meet another set of testing or whatever requirements are in place in April.
At the end of one trip, we took the bus that Dario recommends from Torino to MXP --- it's a comfortable coach-type bus. Easy, no problems. We had a very early flight home so we found a very nice quiet historic hotel nearby (i.e not an airport hotel), Osteria della Pista, that picked us up from the airport where the bus left us, took us to the hotel for dinner and the night, then took us back to the airport in the morning. I remember it being a free service, but maybe that was because it was in the off season. Anyway, totally avoided going into Milan. You could do what we did, but in reverse, if you didn't want to arrive in Torino so late (although I agree with everybody that safety is not an issue in a country where people are just starting to eat dinner in restaurants at 7:30pm and people are out and about in the streets --- not like where I live!).
Thanks for the information. Glad to hear the bus is comfortable. And yes, I forgot about the late dinners there, makes sense!
Definitely the bus. Also, the train from MXP to Centrale is expensive.
