We figured out ( I think) how to get from Salerno to Matera. Now we have to determine how to get from Matera to Ferrendina Scalo to catch the train to Bologna. Would appreciate any info anyone can provide.

Start with Rome2Rio.com. Keep drilling down till you find links to the appropriate companies. Go to their websites for accurate schedule, duration and fare information. Be very careful about the day of the week. There's often no bus service on Sundays or holidays.

Avoid Rome2Rio, or at least use it only as a first step. Not surprisingly there is a FAL bus from Matera to Ferrandina Scalo (or Ferrandina FS).
On Sundays it departs from Visitazione Square at 5:50, 18:40 and 19:07. You'd better learn how to use the (italian only) FAL site: https://eticket.ferrovieappulolucane.it
It's trains that do not run in Puglia on Sundays, not buses. Only Buses can break-even when locals are going to work/school.
