Is it easier and/or cheaper to go by bus or train from Venice to Padau? I have not had luck reading the train and bus schedules on line. Can I just purchase tickets on arrival at the airport? Carol
I would take the airport bus to Venezia Mestre train station (not Venezia S. Lucia), then the local train from there to Padova, which runs frequently and takes 15 minutes; see also www.trenitalia.com. Tickets for departures called "Freccia..." are slightly more expensive and are sold for specific trains. Tickets for Regional or Regional Veloce trains only cost €3.30 and must be date-stamped in a device before entering the track area. Do purchase tickets at the station, not in advance.
Thank you Laura; that was very helpful. Carol
There is a direct bus from Marco Polo to Padova. The schedule is here: http://ro.autobus.it/ro/asp/ricercaorari.asp?user=sita
For the departure station (Fermate di Partenza), select VENEZIA AEROPORTO MARCO POLO TESSERA; for the arrival station (Fermate di Arrivo), select PADOVA AUTOSTAZIONE. You'll see that they run every 30-60 minutes and take 65 minutes.
I second the recommendation for the bus from the airport to Padua. It was right outside the terminal, and was incredibly easy. (and I never find buses easy)
I asked at the information desk in the airport and they pointed me to the bus stop. I'm not remembering whether I bought the ticket in the airport or on the bus, but that part was also easy and self-evident.
There is a ticket window inside the airport, also pointed out to me at the information desk.
Hi Carol,
Yes, easy bus connections, and the bus makes a quick stop at Venice on the way. The ticket area is near the front entrance on the lower floor.
Note that the Italian name for Padua (not Padau) is Padova. That's what most if not all of the signs will say at the train station. Just like Venice is Venezia. (The one that stumps most people is that the Italian name for Florence is Firenze.)
