Transportation from Florence to Military Cemetery nearby?

We will be in Florence with a tour group in September and would like to use the 'free' afternoon time to visit the military cemetery outside the city. To arrange this with our tour group (not RS), we were quoted the price of $139.00 pp. for a 3 hour excursion. I plan to do some more research on public transportation or cabs, but does anyone have any insight from personal experience in something like this? All we would really need is transportation out and back. Mike

I haven't done it but google maps shows a half hour bus ride and a five minute walk using bus 365A or 370 from the train station.

I've wanted to visit the cemetery since I was in Florence years ago. I just haven't had a opportunity. If you get a chance please report back (assuming you go).

Thanks! This was very helpful. I have printed the route and the maps of getting to the bus station and have been checking out the site for fares and returns once we visit the cemetery. Would a cab be another realistic option to your knowledge? We have not been to Florence before. What about Uber?

Here is a link to a taxi website that will give you an idea of cost. Usually the taxi cost is for 1-4 people but always need to check that for sure. http://www.best-airport-transfers.com/florence-limousine-service/taxi-transfers-from-florence-to-impruneta.html

Not sure about Uber in Italy, last I read it was being banned, but who knows.

You could probably rent a car for the day for less than the cost of the taxi, so that's an option to look at.

Thanks! I'll check it to all these options! I appreciate your ideas. Mike

From a previous advice I gave some time ago to another traveler.

You need to take a Busitalia bus. Busitalia is the new name of Sita. Busitalia (formerly Sita) is one of the bus companies that is part of the Autolinee Chianti Valdarno bus consortium and operates extra-urban buses to the communities outside Florence (Firenze). The website is provided below at the bottom. The bus station is in Florence on Via Santa Caterina da Siena, a street starting on the piazza where the train station is (Piazza Stazione) on the Bar Deanna side. Bar Deanna is one of the cardinal point of the Piazza Stazione (Italians don't know how to think East, West, North, South, they go by landmarks, and that bar is one, so learn the name). The Busitalia buses that pass in front of the Cemetery are:
365 Firenze-Gaiole in Chianti
368-370 Firenze-Poggibonsi
I'm not sure if 366, which is operated by CAP (another bus company part of the ACV consortium) goes by it as well.

The timetables are below. The cemetery is located between the following 2 stops:
-PONTE DEGLI SCOPETI
-TERME DI FIRENZE
I think there is a bus stop also in front of the cemetery, but it is not listed in the timetables, which generally list only the main stops. In any case coming from Florence the SCOPETI stop comes first. You need to call the stop, because on extra-urban buses buses don't stop unless there are people getting on or off. Ask the driver to let you off at the CIMITERO DEGLI AMERICANI (pronounce: Chi-mee-tero Deyyi Americanee).
On the timetables below, note that some bus runs have few stops. They use the freeway (they are express lines), don't take those.

Good luck with this adventure. You'll need it if you don't speak any Italian. If you feel uneasy about testing your Indiana Jones' skills of independent exploring, you can also take the easy way: a taxi from Florence.

  • Taxi from Florence to the Cimitero degli Inglesi: more than 30 euro each way.
    • Busitalia bus from Florence: maybe 5 euro.
    • Proudly telling with your friends at get together back home that you traveled on a bus out in the countryside with the locals where nobody spoke English and you made it relying only on your limited Italian and hand language better than Rick Steves would: Priceless.

Oneill- That price seems extremely high for the cemetery, it is only a few km from Firenze. We drove there from Cortona and it was absolutely beautiful. Think Arlington Cemetery with undulating hills and cypress trees. The curator of the cemetery is from NYC and very informative, you don't need any type of guide, as he and the members of his crew will walk with you. Roberto post is very informative (as usual) so I would heed his suggestions.

We visited that cemetery in 2011. We did have a car so I can't help you there, but I can tell you I was very awed by those brave servicemen and women that are buried there. It was an honor to walk among these individuals and know of their sacrifice. The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. Please do enjoy your visit.

There are some very nice reviews of it on Tripadvisor.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all...but especially Roberto! Everything you have all added will make for a memorable day. The detailed information about the buses and riding them is wonderful! The reason this is so important to me is that my uncle, my mother's younger brother, is one of the airman buried in that cemetery so this is a MUST do out of respect for his service and life for our country and those of the European allies. He was lost at the very end of the war.

We will definitely take the bus...and enjoy the adventure! I'll let you all know how it turns out! Mike

I presume you've checked out the ABMC website for the cemetery. although they don't give great instructions for how to get there on public transport, you'll want to check out the brochure and other material they have on line.

https://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries-memorials/europe/florence-american-cemetery

I also found that if you contact the staff at the cemetery (in my case, a WWI cemetery in eastern France) ahead of your visit and tell them that you're coming to visit the grave of a family member, they will look up the site of the family member's grave and may do other things* to make your visit special. It's worth an email to see!!

It's wonderful that you're getting this chance to go. In our case, we were the first family members ever to visit the grave of this young man who fell at Verdun at the age of 18. It was a very moving experience.

(*p.s. I don't want to build up unrealistic expectations in case they aren't able to do this, but in our case, for instance, they provided paper and charcoal so that we could make a rubbing impression of the gravestone, and they sounded the carillon.)

Great ideas, Kim! I will do everything you suggested. We had planned to take a folder of photos and information on my uncle, but sending ahead would make things go much more efficiently. Thanks! MIke
