The trains from the airport are fine especially the Leonard Express. We probably been on the train over a dozen times, and never saw a "gypsies" or a crook. They might exist but it is not a big problem on these trains. At 14E/person on LE it is too costly. "Gypsies" or that type of theft rarely ride trains because the get away is limited when the train is moving. They work the cars when people are getting on and off. The airport station is too small and too obvious for them to be there.

stayed at the lancelot in june...nice people. anyways, if you are 1 or 2 people, i recommend taking the train to ternini station and getting a taxi from there (15 euros for train, then taxi fare; taxis wait out in front of the station). if you are 3 or 4 people, taking a taxi directly from the airport is the best deal and very convenient (45 euros flat fee for up to 4 people and luggage). if you are 5 people or more, consider contacting the lancelot and asking them to arrange to have you picked up by a large van at the airport (usually fits up to 7 people; 90-100 euros).

If there are two of you then the most efficient would be a taxi. The rate is currently fixed at 40E. Use the L Express as suggested earlier would be 28E plus the taxi from the station which could be another 10E or more with tip. A cheaper solution would be the SITBUS for 8E/each plus the taxi from Termini. PS Forgot to add you can take the Regional train from the airport for maybe 5 to 8 E. It is slower and makes a couple of stops but gets you to Termini just the same.

I would take a taxi from the airport to your hotel. The first time I was in Rome my wife and I took the train to Termini and this was fine until we got lost trying to find our hotel. There are a lot of taxi's waiting outside Termini and the ones that approach you when you walk outside of the station are the one RS warns you about. I have had bad experience taking taxi's for short rides as they seem to find the longest way to get to your destination. I like the flat rate from the airport and would suggest taking this route. In addition the trains from the airport carry gypsies and other crooks waiting to prey on you.

Sue, My husband and I are staying at the Lancelot 9/14-9/18. We were there six years ago and loved it. They have a shuttle van from the hotel that will pick you up at the airport. All you have to do is e-mail them a week to ten days before your arrival with your flight number. The charge for two persons is 50 euros.

Ron In Rome continues to make our work on this board so much easier with his incredibly helpful site which is in essence a huge FAQ about travel in Italy. See in particular How do I get to FCO which also addresses the other direction.

Took a taxi, least stressful way to do it and you won't save much doing it any other way. Really enjoyed The Lancelot. Lot's of people reading RS at breakfast.

Sue, I suggest romecabs.com. You book it before you leave home & give them your flight information & they meet you outside the baggage claim area holding a sign with your last name on it. They are very reliable and highly regarded on this forum & TA. The price is comparable to a taxi but you don't have to worry whether the taxi has the "official seal" or not (as Rick Steves warns). Our flight was over 5 hours late and I was worried that the driver wouldn't be there to meet us but he had monitored our arrival time and was there waiting. He drove us in a comfortable and clean mercedes to our apartment in Rome and he was very friendly; he pointed out various landmarks as we approached Rome.
