Four adults on our last leg of a 2 week trip. We are leaving Bari and have 1 night to stay before heading to Rome for our final night. What town for the night on the way to Rome and what is the best transportation, train or car? We will be there the first two weeks in September. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Lorie
You should go to Rome a day earlier and stay in Rome 2 nights. The most convenient way to get there is probably by train (about 4 hours). A rental car might be a little cheaper than train tickets for 4 people, but not as relaxing, especially for the driver.
Roberto, We are starting out in Rome for 3 nights (we also have been there before). Our last night in Rome cause we don't want to miss our early AM flight back to New York. What do you recommend? Have you been to Puglia? Any tips? Thanks,
Lorie
Puglia is wonderful. We did a bike trip in May. Alberobello is probably the best known town there, but all the small towns are wonderful. We took a side trip out of Puglia to see Matera. We enjoyed Polginano a Mare and Monopoli right on the Adriatic. We also took the train to Lecce for a night/day before heading back to Bari and on to Rome. Fast train is your best bet, it's easy, and it's 4 hours. If you take a regular train, you are looking at 6 hours travel time. I highly recommend you book in advance on the fast train and get a seat reservation so you can all sit close. You can go on line to do this and get an e-ticket for your journey. The Bari train station is small, and easy to access.
Lorie, I just looked up one Bari>Rome trip on Trenitalia. There are probably other itineraries, but this one showed the following stops: Bari Centrale 13:17 Barletta 13:43 13:45 Foggia 14:13 14:22 Benevento 15:23 15:25 Caserta 16:02 16:04 Roma Termini 17:20 Then I Googled Foggia, Benevento and Caserta. I think they all look interesting. You & your family could decide on the one that's most appealing. Then just hop off the train, spend the evening, and continue the trip to Rome the next day.
OR if you haven't seen Matera yet it's about an hour by train or bus from Bari. So you could go to Matera, spend the night, return to Bari and catch that 13:17 train (or a later one) and go straight to Rome.
Stop in Caserta and visit the Reggia di Caserta (Royal Palace). It's Italy's answer to Versailles.
