My preferred transportation for this route is the Marozzi bus directly from the bus station near Tiburtina train station in Rome to Corso Italia in Sorrento in front of the Circumvesuviana train station. Travel time is about 4 hrs. with a stop for a bathroom break. Here is a link to check the schedule:

Others may prefer the Trenitalia train from Rome to Naples, then a change to the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. It's a matter of personal preference. Check all the schedules to see what works best for you and your traveling companions. Buon Viaggio!
August 15 is a national holiday.
Both Trenitalia and italotreno will run the usual number of high speed trains to Napoli Centrale, but the circumvesuviana local trains from Napoli to Sorrento could run on a reduced schedule.
To get to Tiburtina, take the Regionale from the airport for 8 EUR pp. Normally every 15 minutes, but if it is a holiday, maybe running a Sunday schedule every 30 minutes. Takes 56 minutes to get to Tiburtina.
I agree with Christine. The bus is comfortable and drops you off in Sorrento.
