Transportation, flights and advice for travel in Domodossola & Milan, Italy

Hello, we are going to Wengen Switzerland, flying into Zurich seems to be the best so far, we are staying for a week then going to domodossola Italy in June 2023 and will fly out of Milan on the 18th of June with multi flight option (no plane tickets yet). We are not renting a car but planning on purchading the obernese regional pass in Switzerland what is the advise on getting to each location, best way to plan getting plane times and train times to be right for airport arrival times or if there is a better way to get to the airport from domodossola to Milan at the airport in Milan and I also want to know what is the best and quickest way to get to the last supper painting in Milan from domodossola Italy? We will be going on the 16th of June, already have the tickets and will be retuning the same day to stay the remaineder of our trip in Domodossola Italy til Sun June 18. Any and all advice is welcome! Thank you

I assume it would not be the most efficient route between Wengen and Domodossola, but the Centovalli rail line from Locarno to Domodossola is very scenic. It has appeared on lists of the most scenic rail routes in Europe.

If your flight home is on June 18, I don't think it's a good idea to spend the night of June 17 in Domodossola. The train trip is only 90 minutes on the fastest train (departing 8:17 AM), but a change is required, and sometimes stuff happens. If your flight is back to North America, your airline will probably suggest that you be at Malpensa 3 hours before scheduled departure time.

I've only passed through Domodossola after trips on the Centovalli train, and I don't know anything about sightseeing in the town; Wikipedia doesn't list a great deal. I'd be inclined to stay in Milan from the time you see The Last Supper unless you have a special reason for spending multiple nights in Domodossola.

To get to The Last Supper from Domodossola:

There are direct trains (no change required) from Domodossola to the stations Milano Centrale and Milano Porta Garibaldi. The trains to Milano Centrale are a bit faster (no longer than 1:41, vs. 2:13 for those to Porta Garibaldi). Milano Centrale is a bit farther from the location of The Last Supper, but both those train stations are far enough away that you'll probably want to take public transportation or a taxi. There are Metro stations at both the pertinent rail stations, and the Conciliazione station is about 1/4 mile from The Last Supper.

So you are flying into Zurich, spending a week in Wengen, then going to Domodossola where you will stay the rest of your trip. If I understand correctly, you want to do a day trip from Domodossola to Milan on June 16 to see the Last Supper and back to Domodossola where you plan to stay until June 18.

It looks like you'll be traveling by train for four hours round trip (plus getting to and from the station at both ends). All of this in one day! I guess you have a good reason for staying in Domodossola, but since your Last Super visit is only two days away from your return flight home, why not just spend those two nights in Milan instead? Plenty to do there.

And as the other poster said, it might not be wise to travel on your departure day. What if there is a train strike?

I guess there is a reason for staying in Domodossola, that is not much of a tourist destination. As for getting to MXP, the easiest way should be train to Gallarate and then a short taxi run (10-15 minutes) to the airport. So, if for example you leave with the 6:49am train to Milan, you could be at MXP by 8:30.
MXP is so distant from downtown Milan that actually Domodossola is not so far. But staying in downtown Milan on the last night would be safer as, if there is any problem, you always have the option of going to the airport by taxi. From Domodossola the only alternative looks to be a shuttle that has to be reserved in advance, https://www.comazzialibus.com

ACRAVEN... We wanted to go to italy as well and Domodossola was closest and a kinda secret destination thats not very traveled. We were thinking to get back to switzerland to fly home to Alabama but saw online milan would be closer to fly out. We already have an air bnb in domodossola for the remainder of our trip, the last supper was an afterthought.

Domodossola is quite quaint and cute but not a lot to do there. I liked it because it is so different from Emilia Romagna. The airport Malpensa is not near the Milan sites. It is easily reached by a train from Milano Centrale (about an hour I believe) but it is not hear the Last Supper, Duomo or any of the typical sites.

There are trains to Malpensa from Cadorna Station as well as from Milano Centrale. They seem to run twice per hour. Travel time from Cadorna is quite a bit faster (37 minutes vs. 51 minutes). One of our Italian posters has said the neighborhood around Cardorna Station is nicer and has recommended staying there rather than near Milano Centrale. You can probably find a post or two on that topic by using the Search function on this website.

Bonus: Cadorna Station is quite near The Last Supper! Google Maps says the distance is less than 1/2 mile. Cadorna has its own Metro station.

Another bonus: Cadorna is also closer to the Duomo (less than a mile) and a number of other sights in Milan's historic center.

We have decided to stay in Milan and Departing flight is around 11 am or 12 pm out of Linate airport. Its an air bnb near Savona/Tortona area, a short walk from the Navigli area & 17 min walking distance to the Last Supper and close to Cardona Station. Thank you for all the advice.
