What is the best way to travel from Rome to the Amalfi Coast? I'll be flying into Rome, spending a few days there, then to the Amalfi coast for a few days and then back to Rome for a day and then fly out.
Living here, I enjoy driving the Amalfi coast... so we would rent a car and drive. But we drive here everyday, and we're use to the signage and the unique Roman approach to driving! We've done the motorino but that's more dangerous than a car (a heck of a lot of fun though!).
The Amalfi coastline is a difficult drive, not for the faint at heart! Other options would include train from Rome, then bus along the coast...
Becki, the Amalfi Coast is a rather large area. With only a few days to spend there, I suspect you'll only be able to visit one or two of the towns. One possiblility might be to "base" in Sorrento, as the transportation there is fairly straightforward.
To get to Sorrento, use train from Roma Termini to Napoli. When you arrive in Napoli, transfer to the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. You'll also use that train if you plan to visit Pompeii. From Sorrento you could also take a day trip to Capri (a bit pricey but a beautiful location!). If you plan to visit Positano, you'll have to use Bus.
You didn't indicate what time of year you would be travelling there? Some of the schedules may change in the winter months.
Happy travels!
