Transportation between FCO and Civitavecchia

We are flying into FCO and will take a Celebrity cruise out of the port at Civitavecchia the next day. Does anyone have any suggestions about the easiest and cheapest way to get between the airport and the port and visa-versa?
Also, when we return, we plan to rent a car and spend a few days in Montepulciano. Does anyone know about renting cars at the port in Civitavecchia? Thanks. Darrel

The cheapest way for two will be via train. First Leonard Express from the airport (28E for two) into Rome. And the train to Civit the next day - it is a commuter, 3 or 4 trains an hour, 45 mins to 1-15 depending on train and 8 to 12E/per person again depending on train. We have made that run four times. It helps to travel light. See http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/71530/civitavecchia-transportation-to-rome-or-airport.html I have not seen any car rentals around the port or the train station. But am sure there are some in the city itself. You should come to our next meeting if you have more questions - third Sat in Aug, 10AM, Panera in the Aspen Grove shopping center, NW corner of Mineral and Santa Fe.

If you are going out to civitavecchia the day you land you don't have to take the express train to the termini station. You can take the regional train out to Trastevere and then from there out to civitavecchia. The trip to Trastereve will cost 8 euros and on to civitavecchia will cost 4.10 each. If you plan on spending the night in Rome you may want to take the express train into the city. Otherwise, just save the extra money and take the regional trains to the port. Donna

He said he was taking a cruise out of Civit... the NEXT DAY.

I understand that but he may want to spend the night in Civitavecchia instead of Rome. He doesn't specify which, and he specifically states he would like transport help from airport to the port, is why I listed an alternative to your suggestion. If you read my response you would see that I posted if he was spending the night in Rome he should probably take the express train into the city. No need to get upset, just offering alternatives that he might not know about. Donna

Thanks to both of you for your responses. They are very helpful. We haven't yet decided whether to stay in Rome the first night or just to go to Civitavecchia and try to recover from jet lag before we board the ship. That decision will determine what we do, but I think the train sounds like a good plan.

The is almost nothing in Civit and a couple of hotels are some distance from the port. There is no better way to beat jet lag than walking the streets of Rome.

I'd agree with Frank and Donna. Ride the FM1 into town and STAY in Trastevere for the night. It's about an hour train ride out to Civitavecchia from the Roma Trastevere station. Trastevere is a wonderful part of town to explore on foot, and a good start to your trip. You could ride the FM1 from the FCO Train Station, get off at Trastevere and then ride the #8 Tram into the heart of Trastevere., You could get tickets for the tram and the train out at the FCO train station. You could even buy your Rome-Civiitavecchia tickets for the next day at the same time (Regionale tickets are good for 2 months until validated!). Spend the night wandering Trastevere - here's some hotels you could look at: The Best Hotels and B&B's in Trastevere. Staying here is a good compromise. You could wander through Trastevere, or if you're feeling up to it, walk across Ponte Sisto or Ponte Garibaldi - or even ride the #8 Tram into central Rome. It's not far away! As Frank says, there's not much out at Civitavecchia. I'd wait and ride the train the following day. Check out the schedules at Trenitalia and (except for Sundays and holidays), they leave about every 30 minutes from Roma Trastevere to Civitavecchia - plenty of options. You might read this post for more train info to the port: Traveling from Rome to Civitavecchia - Good Luck!

Thanks again for all your responses. Frank, I think you replied to my question about the meeting Saturday, but I haven't figured out how to get to your response. Could you please just email me at bryantdar@msn.com with the info? Thanks.
