Transportation around Rome

My wife and I are going to be in Rome for the first time in July. We are flying into FCO, and will stay 3 nights right on Lake Albano (20 or so minutes south of Rome), and 2 nights in Monteriggioni, which I believe is about 2+ hours north of Rome. Then we'll fly out of Florence. I am unable to find train or bus maps for Rome online. I guess my question is, just based on that skeleton outline, do you think it's necessary that we rent a car? I'd like to save money if possible and use public transportation, but I can't really figure out how we'd make our way around, how much to estimate it would cost, and how much longer it would take versus just driving ourselves.

Been to Rome four times for a total of three weeks. Never felt a need for a car. After 24 hours in Rome you will understand why many believe it is very stupid to drive in Rome. Public transit works for everything.

I cannot imagine anyone who would use a car in Rome. Public transportation is all you need. For that matter, you don't need a car in most of Europe. Save yourself the grief.

I'm the all-time driving proponent. I've never spent a day in europe in the last thirty years without a car.

When I get to Rome, I park it.

Period.
