transportation

My family and I will be taking a cruise end of August from Rome to Athens. We plan to stay in Rome 3 days before the cruise. Any suggestions on what is good options for transportation from Fiumicino airport to Rome city center and back Rome city center to the port of Civitavecchia? Thank you.

How many people and how much luggage? That makes a difference for the recommendations on the best way to reach your hotel.

It is fairly simple and easy. From the airport take the train, Leonard Express, to Termini. If four with reasonable luggage take a taxi since the price is fixed. Stay in the Termini area -- Hotel Sonya or Aberdeen are good choices. From Termini take the train to Civit... Basically a commuter run with 2 to 3 trains an hour and about 45 minutes to an hour 15 depending on the train and in the range of 10 to 15 euro/person. The train station in Civi.... is less than a mile from the port entrance. We walk it. In fact, you probably can see your cruise ship from the station.

If you are going on a cruise, you'll probably have more than just carry on bags. You can take an official taxi which has a fixed rate to the center of the city. Or you can have a private car service meet you inside the terminal, escort you to vehicle, and take you to the hotel. And it should only cost a little bit more than a regular taxi. We've used Rome Cabs (a real car service & not a taxi) many times and have been well pleased. We send an email outling our needs and get an answer within 24 hours.

From Rome to the port, a car service will be expensive, but probably worth the price if you have much luggage. If it is too expensive, then you can take the train as many, many do. Then a taxi from the train station to the port itself.

Thank you for the quick responses. There will be 3 of us with carryon only. Would you advice to purchase the train tickets in advance or just wait til we get there? thanks

The FAQ section says the following:

"Roma Pass 72 Hours holders can use the public transport within the City of Rome for 72 hours. Please note: only public transport is included."

"The Cards do not cover transport to and from Fiumicino airport (Leonardo Express train, FL1 train, local urban services)."

https://www.romapass.it/en/FAQ/

So your trip from FCO airport into Rome and from Rome to the cruise port are not included.

For Civit..... I would wait till you are there. It is commuter run. Three, four trains an hour -- most are Regionale with no seat reservations. If full, stand till a seat is available. At least one of the trains each hour is faster with reservation. Just buy the ticket when you decide to go. That way you are not locked into a schedule.

PS You might have problems getting a taxi from the station to the port. Distance too short. There will be a public bus making a loop but you can probably walk faster. Nice walk along the beach and it is flat.
