From Varenna a short walk down hill and a short crossing.

From Como (San - I can't remember this late at night - Giovanni??) quite a long walk depending on which dock you need, different ones use different docks several hundred metres away from each other, and then a slow ride up most of the lake stopping frequently which takes quite a long time.

Where are you taking the train from which arrives at Como?

If you are coming from Milan for the train, look to take a train to Varenna instead. It's in the mid-lake region and it's a short ferry ride to Bellagio. From Como it's a long ferry ride.

Seconding the vote for Varenna: it's easy to get the ferry from there, and it's a pretty town besides. I might advise buying your train tickets onward from Varenna when you buy tickets TO Varenna: the train station there doesn't sell them. While they can be purchased at a travel agency in town, it's reassuring to just have them in hand for whenever you're ready to move on.
