Transportation

First time traveling on cruise then disembarking in Rome to stay a few nights. Staying at Hu Roma Camping in Town. Does anyone know the best way to get there from port? Take shuttle to airport then transportation from airport to Hu Roma? 3 adults traveling. Any tips are greatly appreciated

The cheapest way is probably going to the Civitavecchia train station (about 1/2 mile from the port), then take a Regionale train to Rome, however alight the train at the ROMA AURELIA station (an intermediate station 47 min from Civitavecchia), which is only a 1/2 mile walk (15 min) to the Hu Roma Campground. The train ticket for that segment is 4.60€ per person.

If you don't want to walk the 1km, there is also a bus (246 or 247) in front of the Aurelia train station which can take you to the campground bus stop in less than 5 min. The Aurelia station is not a major station therefore there won't be taxi stands in front.

Train Timetables are below:
www.trenitalia.com
enter from CIVITAVECCHIA to ROMA AURELIA.

If you prefer to travel in style (and more comfort, especially if you have substantial luggage), you can take a taxi or private transfer at the port and ask to drop you at the Hu Roma Camping. Then ask you to take you directly to the campground. The cost should be around 140 or 150€.

The campground has a private shuttle (not free) which shuttles guests from the campground to the Metro station CORNELIA (metro line A). That will be a convenient option for when you visit the city while staying in Rome.

There are also the 246 and 247 buses. I think the 246 goes all the way in front to the Vatican Museums, so convenient for visiting those.

hey hey
@ Roberto de Firenze,
mahalo for all your expertise. i always call you the GURU of italy LOL there are others on forum that give good advice too
now with cruise season beginning, so many posts about "best, cheapest, fastest" ways to take from the port. depending how many ships are coming in or leaving the port with be crazy & crowded time adding thousands wanting the same thing. lots of grumpy/nasty/obnoxious/sweaty cruisers upset. been there done that but we waited till last off or reserved taxi for us to rome, knowing check-in 2-4pm to hotel. what's your stress level. got to hotel, left luggage, roamed around, stopped at cafe/restaurant outside for wine & "pupus" (appetizers) just to people watch, it was great.
WOW looked at where this Hu Roma Camping is, that's alot of long bus rides/transfers/walking especially with luggage.
good luck, have a great time and enjoy.

It is a bit further out but we didn’t want a typical hotel. Once checked in we will use public transportation. It shall be an adventure!! Unless we decide to change to a place in Rome. Any affordable recommendations??

The campground has a private shuttle (not free) which shuttles guests
from the campground to the Metro station CORNELIA

Tiny correction: according to the website, the campground's shuttle goes to the Cipro metro station versus Cornelia: third stop past Cornelia, and even closer to the Vatican.

If planning to use this service versus public transport, I'd be sure to book it ASAP upon arrival (or sooner) as the bus doesn't look to be coach-sized, doesn't make more than 6-7 runs per day, and so might fill up quickly. If planning to use public buses/metro, I'll recommend buying multi-day passes that only need to be validated the first time you use them.

As Roberto mentioned, if hauling cruise luggage then the $$ for a taxi may be well spent. IMHO, it's not going to be fun dealing with it on public transport. If you're flying out of Rome to go home, you'll be dealing with it both ways.

I do understand the fun of something different! That said, I don't think I would have chosen the camping location if you've never been to Rome and are intending on spending what little time you have exploring the main attractions in the city. It strikes me as the sort of accommodation you book if intending to spend more of your time at the campground/at the pool than in town. Affordable? Means different things to different people but for efficiency's sake and if your budget is tight, I would have explored private rooms at some of the better hostels in-or-closer-to center.

What time of year is this trip?

Great!
Explore hotel options on booking.com for your dates to see what you can find that suit your budget and which have decent reviews. Post back if you have concerns about any you're considering?

It’s so hard to decide where to stay! Airport shuttle, breakfast included, near metro station! Of course I want it all! And I want to be close to everything! Not enough time. But I think the place we are staying will be nice. Thank you!

hey hey shaneskysummer
happy to hear you have a hotel closer to rome, where is hotel and when is this trip? (what does "nus fr cruise port to rome mean"?
hope you're okay with hotel, but if not you can also look at:
monasterystays.com
rome convent stays that are simple, breakfast included, stairs/elevators, A/C, dinners offered for a fee, courtyard. look where it's located (near colosseum, spanish steps, pantheon/navona, vatican) take your pick
booking.com
filters on left side to click what you're hoping for and budget. don't know what "affordable in euros means" prices have skyrocketed up so fast everywhere, so many people are still traveling, middle april to may high season for USA spring breaks/graduations and then the high high season of summer with the HEAT! then into september/october is harvest season, party/fairs/festivals then into the holiday seasons. hardly a low season anymore and you'll notice many post with italy are all the same places (rome, florence, venice, tuscany, lake como, dolomites, amalfi and the coast, cinque terre, naples/sorrento/capri areas)
keep asking questions, forum here to give you good bad and ugly just want you to understand which leads to a happy vacation

I meant to say a bus from the cruise port to Rome. We are going in June. Found a place called Aurelia Vatican Rooms. I will look into the monestary site you mentioned!

You can take a train from Civitavecchia to Rome. Lots of people do that to save the 140€ or so for a private car (limo service). But for 3 people with luggage a private limo transfer straight to the hotel if your choice is probably the best option at least in terms of comfort and hassle.
I wouldn’t stay near the airport. That’s not convenient to see the sights of Rome. Just stay in the city center wherever you can find the accommodations that suit your needs and budget, then the day when you fly out take a regular taxi to the airport. It’s 55€ flat taxi fare imposed by the City. If your hotel is near the Termini station there is also the Leonardo Express train every 15 min to the airport but it costs 14€ per person therefore for 3 people a taxi at 55€ is not much more.
