We are planning a family trip in June 2013, there will be 5 adults & 3 children. We are flying into Milan and then going up to Lake Como, and then down to Lucca to a Villa. What would be the best form of transportation for all of us?

Where in Lake Como and how fare is the villa from Lucca? The local train from Milano Centrale is great to get to Varenna or Como. For Menaggio or Bellagio, you will need a ferry from either Como or Varenna. From Lake Como to Lucca, again it's the train. For the most part, these will be a Regionale train to Milan, a high-speed to Florence and another Regionale to Lucca. If the Villa is outside of Lucca, you may need a taxi to get thre.

With that many people, it might make sense to rent a van, if you can find one big enough. Train fare would add up fairly quickly.
