As I recall, your hotel is right around the corner from the hotel I stayed at in 2007. From my hotel, you went across the street and up the steps and there was the Vatican Museum--so yep, very near!

"Best" is subjective, depending on how many people are in your party, how much luggage you have, etc. I did what Jerry described above. I took the Leonardo Express to Termini, hopped the metro line A to the Cipro-Musei Vaticani stop. Here's where I made a mistake--when you come out of the metro stop, you need to make a SHARP right onto Via Fra Abenzio. As I recall, there was a small brown sign pointing towards the Vatican Museum and after a short walk, you should pass by a church (Santa Maria della Grazie). You then will have a funny shaped intersection and will need to get over to Via Candia which is a main street through that area.

Google does show the metro stops and definitely use it to map out your route and use the street view so you can recognize landmarks when you get there. Keep in mind the street signs tend to be up on buildings and not separate poles like is common in the U.S. Despite my misadventures trying to get to the hotel, it wasn't that difficult.

Or, if not up to the challenge of public transportation, take a taxi or arrange a shuttle pickup. Have a fantastic trip!

Take the train from the airport to Termini, buy a metro ticket, and then the metro to the Vatican museum Metro station. Suggest you plot the hotel using either Google or viamichelin.com--viamichelin does show the Metro stations, not sure if Google does.

If coming in from an overnight flight, my best would be the taxi at a fixed rate of 40E. The marginal cost for the taxi over the train/sub is less than 15E and closer to 10E. With luggage and the need to find you way, it is a small price to pay for the convenience.

thanks Frank, I'll keep that in mind as well. I'm a flight attendant and I'm use to having my transportation arranged for me so I never have to worry about it. Rome will be a first for me so I'm really looking forward to it.

BTW, my friend that is coming with me is also from Centennial, CO and it will be her first trip abroad. We decided it was time 2 single women took Europe by storm and had the time of our life!!!
