Transport to Florence airport for super-early flight

Our flight home on Oct 7 (a Sunday) begins with a departure from Florence at 6:30 am (to Rome, then from there to ATL). Is best mode from city center a taxi? Will we need to reserve something ahead of time to get to airport at such an early time (4:30 am??) I've read that checking in 1-1/2 hours before flight is enough since Florence airport is small. Is that true?

We just had our hotel call a taxi when we checked out. We had an early flight too. Taxi was there in under 5 min, and the good thing about the early hour: No traffic! The airport is very small, but due to construction, the walk to the gate was long (to me).We checked in about 90 min before the flight (we had bags to check), and spent an hour at the gate twiddling our thumbs.

At the time of the morning and the airport an hour and a half is adequate. It is like a domestic flight.

That is plenty of time on all three counts - a small airport, a same-country flight, and an early departure. The airport opens at 4:00 but many service desks may not open before 5:00. It is best to reserve a taxi the evening before so you know it's set and hotel staff will normally be happy to do that. Expect to pay about 25 euros, or possibly a few more if there's a nighttime fee.

I do not understand, if you are going from Florence to Rome by plane, I believe you arrive at Fiumicino or are you arriving at Ciampino airport?
When is your plane to Atlanta?

Thanks, all, for the responses! That is reassuring to hear. I hated to book such an early flight, but it was the only connection available from Florence to Rome, where we'll sit at FCO for a while before heading on back to US.

We just took a 6:35 am flight out of Florence to Charles De Gaulle about a week ago. We went with a taxi, had the hotel call it in the morning. Cost about 20 euro but there’s really no good other way at that time of morning. We got there about 5 am and that was plenty of time. We had to go through a little passport control thing to get to our gate since we were flying to France, so there was a bit of a back-up, but you should have no trouble at all since you’re flying domestically for your first leg. Florence airport is very small and manageable. You actually have to go out to the tarmac and up stairs to get to the plane, it’s that small.
