transport to and from La Spezia cruise port to Florence for day trip

Hello,
I will be on a cruise that docks at La Spezia and I am wondering what are good options for transport to and from Florence for a day trip. My boat docks on a Fri in June 7am-7pm. The cruise's excursions dont look appealing to me. Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports book talks about grabbing a taxi with a group of 8 from Livorno for 50 Euros round trip per person. Does anyone know if something similar exists at the La Spezia port and what a fair cost for that trip would be? Other easy ideas?

Thank you!
Caryn

Try googling La Spezia port tour excursions.

You can get to Florence in about 1 3/4 hours if you an get the 8:15 Freccia train to Pisa where you change to a regional train to Florence. About 24 EUR for that way. Return is all regional trains taking 2 1/2 hours, costing about 14 EUR. That gets you 5 hours in Florence.

I'd just get to the La Spezia train station and take a local train to the Cinque Terre. It's just a short distance. Florence has so much to see and it's just a little far from the port.

I was just there last fall. The tourist information office inside the cruise terminal can book a cab for you. If you find another couple to share it, it might not be overly expensive. However, since Florence is so far away, you might not have enough time there to enjoy the city. Pisa or Lucca are much closer and easier to do on your own. If you must see Florence, I'd probably take the cruise excursion for the speed and convenience.

Keep in mind that La Spezia's train station is not near the cruise terminal--it's about a 15-minute ride by taxi and will cost yo about 15 euros.

Does your cruise ship not have a “Florence on your own” kind of shore excursion, that is, a bus trip that takes you to and from with the guarantee of making the ship? If so, I would seriously consider that because the traffic and length of time getting to and from can be rough. You also may want to look on a website like cruisett.com to see how many ships will be in port that day. If there are a lot, you’ll be competing against a horde of people for public transportation. Last year, coming back from Pisa to the port of Livorno, we ran into some amazing traffic that made us almost an hour late and necessitated us being dropped off right at the ship just before it sailed. Since Florence is much further away the potential is there for traffic to be even more of a problem. Also it really depends on what you like. My husband and I went to Florence a few years ago and spent three days there and while we liked it, it was not the highlight of Italy for us. On the cruise last summer, we spent a half day in Pisa and were surprisingly pleased with the tower, baptistery, and cathedral. I have also heard really good things about Lucca. So either of those towns may be a better choice for you than Florence. Or, if not better, more practical for what you can accomplish in a short period of time.
