Looking at private driver rates from Assisi to Rome - would like to stop in Orvieto on way for walk about/lunch. First quote was over 600€. We are a party of 2 -
Any recommendations?

Perhaps it would be more cost effective to book a private transfer only to Orvieto, since that is just an hour or so drive and not a direct train ride like Assisi to Rome is. Store bags while there, then hop on the easy train to Rome.

600 euros is not unreasonable at all for that length of trip. It's at least 3 hours drive time, plus the wait time while you visit Orvieto.
Valadelphia has a great suggestion- you could probably cut the driver fee in half by just booking driver to Orvieto, then take the cheap 1.5 hour train to Rome.
