Hi,just wondering what would be the best method (most cost effective)of transport for the 5 of us to get from Marco Polo airport to our accommodation near the Rialto bridge. We will have just one international cabin sized suitcase each. We were also wondering what would be the best transport options when we will be leaving Venice travelling from the Rialto to Piazzale Rome to pick up our rental car.
There are three ways to get to Venice proper from Marco Polo airport.
The cheapest options are to take a bus from just outside the main terminal entrance to P le Roma and from there to take a vaporetto to the Rialto. There are two buses that make the run.
The blue ATVO bus is run by a private company. It is set up like a long haul transport bus or what looks like a tour bus. There is a large luggage compartment under the bus and the seating section is higher. Cost is currently 3 euro. You buy tickets in the terminal. This bus is an express.
The other orange bus is run by ACTV. The folks that run the vaporetto system. Single ticket price is 2 euro. Vaporetto from P le Roma single ticket price is 6.50 euro. If you are planning on buying a multiday pass, that pass would cover this bus as well as the vaporetto. You can pick up the pass in the terminal. This bus is a local and has a few stops. It is set up more like a city bus. Luggage storage overhead.
Buses take about 20-25 minutes to P le Roma
The other choices are by water. The docks at the airport are about a 5-10 minute walk from the new terminal to down by the old terminal.
Alilaguna is a larger shuttle boat that runs from the airport to points in Venice. Linea Arrancio (orange) goes to the Rialto. Cost is 13 euro per person. Takes about an hour. Tickets in the terminal.
The other method would be a private water taxi. It will take up to 8 people for about 100 euro. Takes about 30 minutes.

Thanks so much for this great information!!! As always the helpline is so invaluable.
If you choose the bus as your method of transport from the airport, and you plan to ride the vaporetti (Grand Canal, outlying islands), consider purchasing a travel card. These allow unlimited travel on the buses and vaporetti, and can be purchased at the airport. You'll have to do the math to see if a travel card is a good value in your specific case.
