I will be in Ferrara in October. I arrive by train and want to visit several sites. Does anyone know if there is a bus system? Are taxis easy to hire? Can the taxis enter the ZLT? Is it better to just walk?
It's an easy 20 min walk from the station to the centre. I did it in July heat with luggage.
Yes, they have a bus system. Buses from the train station to the center of town. Line No 1.
If you are staying in Ferrara in the historic center, almost everything is a flat, easy walk.
I visited last year, it was about €8 for a taxi from the train station to my hotel, across the street from the Castello. When I left, I walked a block to the bus stop.
Chani, did you stay at Anunziato like me ?
Has anybody been to Ferrara in the last couple of years since the big earthquake there that did so much damage? I haven't been back, but it used to be a very special place to me because that's one of the places my dad (a British Commando) was during the war.
I visited the region a couple of months after the 2 earthquakes of 20th and 29th May 2012. There was no sign of any damage in the historic centre of Ferrara. Mantova, on the other hand, had large parts of the Ducal Palace closed off and the interior of one the large churches was full of scaffolding supporting a damaged roof. Such a constant threat that Italians have to live with.
I ran a half marathon there in March. Very easy to get around but the bicycles were everywhere. For some reason the bicycles were much more noticeable here than in any of the other towns when I was walking/running. Easy to get a taxi if you need one.
Steal a bike. There are so many nobody will even notice.
Nigel, I was there weeks after the earthquake, a year later, and in June 2016. Everything has been restored, or nearly so, and all the sights that were closed because of earthquake damage or restoration are now open.
It's one of my favorite cities.
That's all good to know - thx
David - I did indeed stay at the Anunziato, sadly only for one night before flying from Bologna to Sevilla.
I was there in February last year, didn't even know there'd been a major earthquake (black mark for me, gold star for the city).
Anunziato is a fantastic hotel btw if anyone is looking for digs in this great little city.
... And let me be the one who admonishes Roberto for recommending larceny.
Thanks for the information. I did get a bus information email response from the Ferrara tourist information site as well so I think I will be able to see everything I want to, easily! Thank you Robert for the photo - it looks like it will be easier to just walk on the bikes - rather than try to ride them.
