Transport from Naples to Positano

We are travelling from Rome to Positano in May 2013 & are interested in what is the easiest & most economical way to get from Naples train station to Positano. I've read lots of tips & it appears that it's easiest to travel to Salerno to make the connection rather than Sorrento??? We will have all our luggage( 1 large bag & 1 small each ) as we will be staying 4 days. So what I'm wondering is, if we go by ferry/hydofoil, how far away is the ferry station & how hard would it be to get our bags onto the ferry? If we go by bus also, is the bus stop at the train station or a distance away? Are the buses the type that you can store your luggage underneath the compartment, because I feel it would be difficult to lug them up the bus stairs? If it's all too hard & it seems best to just pay around Euro100 for a taxi, can anyone pass on any details of a taxi service or perhaps hire of a private driver. I did read a tip from someone re this, but it was from 2006. Any help much appreciated.

One tip I read from a local traveller to cut the cost of a private transfer is to take the Circumvesuviana train heading to Sorrento and arrrange to be picked up at the Meta di Sorrento station stop. Here are some popular local companies to ask for a quote, there are others. www.bellantoniolimoservice.com www.gianpierofiorentino.com www.johnnystourservice.com www.amalfi-drive.com www.autoservizidemartino.com http://www.sorrentocars.com/ It might be worthwhile to ask for quotes for the whole journey as well. If it is not a lot more it might be worth it for the comfort and convenience.

Thanks so much Linda. I'll give some of them a try. I did email one taxi company already, but they will only pick up from hotels in Sorrento & not the train station. Still confused as to whether to go from Sorrento or Salerno station also.

The ferry is much more picturesque and only the equivalent of 3 big blocks to the water, and not too far down the dock....many people have done it and a great way to start your Positano visit....and if I'm not mistaken, the bus should start/pickup AT the train station, so you would have generally the choice of seats (if its not during schooltime, cuz I seem to remember schoolkids overrunning some methods of transport)....I have never had to put luggage on the bus, so I can't testify to that, but the ferries do run every hour or so, so you should be able to catch one of them, and if you need to stroll along the lungomare in Salerno (my FAV thing to do) for a bit to kill time, so be it :)

Thankyou everyone for your responses. I have emailed lots of the suggested car companies to get quotes from both Sorrento or Salerno. The ferry sounds good too. Thanks Tom & Katherine. It really helps to know that it is not too far from the train station.
Perhaps we will travel one way by car & return by ferry.

Lee we did the following route (probably the most economical, but not necessarily the easiest, although it wasn't that hard): We arrived at the airport in Naples, and friends drove us to the ferry port. We took the ferry to Sorrento, then a bus up the hill from Sorrento to the train/bus station there. We caught the bus to Positano (and yes it was the type where you can put your big bag underneath we took it several times back and forth). If you decide to go this route, be sure to ask your hotel what Positano stop you should get off at. Any of them will probably involve a walk, but better to get the nearest one to where you need to go. Just keep in mind that easiest and most economical are often mutually exclusive! The Salerno idea sounds like a good one . . .

Lee - the reason I suggested Meta di Sorrento rather than Sorrento as the pick up station is because it is that bit nearer on the road to Positano and would not involve backtracking from Sorrento.

Thanks for the tip again Linda. I didn't even notice the difference until you pointed it out
