Four adults traveling in a few weeks, we arrive at Rome's FCO at 10:00am and are staying at Hotel Aberdeen near Termini Station. Should we take a train or get a cab?
Thanks, Lorie
Cab.
Cheaper (and more comfortable) than train for 4 people, especially considering that you'll have luggage with you.
For 4, agree, take a cab. But do not go with one of the guys that approach you at the airport. Make sure you get a "licensed" cab. The fare is fixed price, so make sure to ask first. Glenn
Cab for four is fixed at 48E. The train for four would be 56E. And that would only take you too Termini so you have about a six block walk or cab ride to Aberdeen. Just go out the door from luggage pick up/immigrations and use the cab starter. You will be fine.
Cab, if you can get all your luggage in it. Its cheaper for 4 than that stupid train from the airport to the Termini. And yes AVOID any offerings from anyone at the airport. Find the taxi stand and cab it!
I too am staying at the Hotel Aberdeen but will be going in September. But taking the train means you really need to take a small suitcase and not a standard size suitcase as it is hard to manage on the train. I am very much considering the shuttle service that was posted answering your question. That sounds like the best option. As I am traveling alone, it would be expensive to take a cab. And you are have four people in your party, you will have luggage and you make have to take two cabs. Not sure, but depends on the size of the cabs and trunk space the cabs have. If you take the train, it is the Leonardo Express from the airport to Rome's Termini Train station. From airport arrivals hall follow the signs to Stazione/Railway Station. Train runs twice an hour and costs around 15 Euro and takes about 30 minutes. You can buy your ticket at the ticket window, a ticket issue machine or at the newstand shop located near the tracks. Be sure to validate your ticket in one of the yellow or blue and gray machines located near the tracks before boarding, or you will risk a fine. Make sure the train you board is going to Rome Termini station and not another Rome train station, such as Rome Orte. Upon arrival exit the train and walk to the main lobby.
It is about a 15 minute walk to the hotel. Exit out the front of the train station. You will be in a big square with many buses called Piazza dei Cinquecento. Walk across the square, then continue straight on the street named Via Einaudi. Follow Via Einaudi to Piazza della Repubblica, a big square with a fountain in the middle. Turn left and walk around the piazza, keeping the fountain to your right to Via Nazionale. Cross to the other side of the street then walk down Via Nazionale to the second street on the right, Via Firenze, turn right and the hotel is on the second block.
We used the airport shuttle. It was 31 euros for two people. Their van accommodates up to 8 people I think, so it might take a little longer than a cab since others may be dropped off before your party. Much easier than taking luggage on the train and takes you to your hotel door. I emailed them and reserved a pickup, then paid the driver in cash. Here's a link: http://www.airportshuttle.it Have a great trip.
Lorie: Back again, could not finish the post. As I was saying, Hotel is on the second block on the right at #48. The hotel sign is easy to miss. I walked it and was fine, I did not need to take a cab from the train station to the hotel, but there are cabs located in front of the train station and should cost about 8-10 Euro. confirm price before entering the cab. Never get in to an unmetered cab or unmarked cab.
I am going on the Rome RS tour and they send me all this information, plus I went on this tour in 2008 so I do remember the train and the walk to the hotel. Hotel was very nice and easy to get to from the station. Make sure when using a Rome cab it has SPQR written on the door. I still think the shuttle would be a good way to go. I took shuttles in Paris and Prague and liked it better than taking a cab. Rome is an amazing city, have a great trip. Please let me know if you take the shuttle and how it was. Thank you.
Ann, Thank you for such great info. I have contacted Aberdeen and for a fee, I think they will have someone pick us up. Have not heard back yet. Aberdeen is a great hotel. We stayed there at our last trip in 2010. Looking forward to another great vacation. If we do deceide to take the shuttle I will let you know how it went. You also have a great time. We will be at the Aberdeen Aug.26-29 returning for the evening before our flight home on Sept 9. Will you be there then? Regards, Lorie
