Transport for 5 and luggage to/from Fiumicino-Roma Airport and hotel

My husband, two children (ages 14 and 10), and his elderly aunt (walks with cane) will be visiting family friends in Abruzzo next week than spending a few days in Rome (it's the kids' first visit). We are flying in and out of FCO. For the week in Abruzzo, we've rented a car which we will be picking up and dropping off at FCO. What do you recommend for transportation for 5 people and their luggage to get from the car rental at FCO to the hotel near the Colosseum? My plan would be to book the same transport back to the airport from the hotel for our departure.

I did a lot of traveling, especially solo traveling, when I was younger and I had no choice but to be very thrifty. So, if it was just me, I would be taking the train to Termini and walking or taking a metro to the hotel. I can't do that with the aunt who can walk but needs assistance. I also lived in Rome at one point for 6 months but it was 25 years ago and I keep hearing how much things have changed. I know a taxi is possible but we would likely need to split the party and that makes me nervous. Has anyone used a private transport service and has a good recommendation? Cost is not necessarily a barrier. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

I’m a bit confused
Are you going in to Rome first then going back to FCO to pick up the car?
If you could clarify your arrival we can advise

There are other pick up locations (Tiburtina for example)

There are taxi vans available at the airport taxi rank-you might just have to wait a few minutes
Flat rate 50 euros plus a bit for the extra passenger/luggage

There are shuttles to the car rental agencies

There are options such as Rome Cabs-a private driver service often recommended here

We arrive at FCO, pick up our rental car, then spend a week in Abruzzo visiting old family friends. We are driving back to Rome and dropping the car at the Hertz at FCO then spending a few days in the city before we leave. My husband's aunt walks with a cane and I cannot manage 2 kids, multiple pieces of luggage, and an elderly relative on public transportation. I would prefer not to split our party up but I don't think a taxi could manage 5 people with all of their luggage.

Has anyone used a private transportation service from FCO to hotel and back that they recommend? Would it be easy to ask them to pick up us up at the Hertz (instead of baggage claim)? I would like specific recommendations for companies that I can book in advance to help me manage traveling with kids, elderly relative, etc. Thank you.

hey hey sponslerjessica
i agree with christina, confused with going back and forth from FCO to rome back to FCO to get car. that's alot of coming and going especially with 5 people and bags.
where are you flying from USA/Canada to rome? make sure your car fits 5 people plus luggage and parking spot is wide enough to get in and out, plus driving laws/rules while in towns/villages. you will need an IDP (international driving permit) from AAA.com/IDP for all drivers.
reserve a taxi for your ride back to FCO for flight back, no flagging down taxis, pick up at the many taxi stands around, usually allowing 3 hours for check in, passport/immigration.
it will be so so busy/crowded in rome, long lines & standing in the heat. be prepared
aloha

We've always used Rome Cabs for travel between the airport and the city. It is a private transport service and not a taxi despite the name. Highly recommend them. Send them an email outlining your needs and you should get a response and quote within 24 hours. If they cannot meet your needs, ask for a referral. We'd be comfortable using anyone the suggest.

Hi all!! We have a trip planned in August and I’m so excited!! Do the cabs accept credit cards or Apple Pay for payment? Or should I have euros?

Hello tmbradley and welcome to the forum!

It would be best if you post your question in your own new thread with a specific subject line
It will get lost here

Not clear what you are referring to but if taxi from FCO
Yes they are required to accept credit cards but always confirm before getting in!
Cash is fine as well- euros!
No tip required

( there is also public transport from FCO in to Rome-ask in your own thread if that is your preference)

You'll want to pull up a vlog from RomeWise called "Taxi in Rome - Do's and Dont's from a local". This will help you better navigate with suggestions regarding transportation from the FCO airport to Rome and the Colosseum area. Good luck!
