We are a party of 6 arriving 2pm on a weekday. What is the best way to get from the airport to our rental. Should we take a shuttle to the train station then either walk or take a taxicab to Oltrarno neighborhood? Should we take a taxicad from the airport? Are there other transportation options I should be aware of?

I would take a taxi to the hotel. I have done it before and as I recall it was not too expensive because it isn't that far.

With six people, you may need two taxis or one large taxi. We took a taxi to the Hilton Metropole which is on the other side of the Arno and it was 25Euro plus a couple more for luggage. Not sure what a large taxi or mini-bus would cost you. But, they do charge about a Euro extra per bag. The alternative is to take the Volainbus from the airport to the train station, walk to the attached bus station and figure out which city bus will take you to a stop near your hotel. Big hint here is that they don't speak much English at the bus ticket window (at least they didn't when we were there). For what you need, I don't think you can beat the taxi.
