How much time should be budgeted from arrival time at Malpensa, to collect luggage, get through customs, and get to train station to catch train to Venice?
The main train station in milan, very large, on north northeast side of town, does NOT have a direct connection to malpensa. the train station on west northwest side, cordona or some such name, is where the transfer train to malpensa connects. Thus, we are arriving at main train station on one day, overnighting in milan AND shifting to neear the cordona station, (just near the fortezza) so as to get on the transfer train to malpensa the next morning.
There is a shuttle bus from Malpensa to Milano Centrale station (http://www.malpensashuttle.it/e-default.htm) it drops you off at the east side of the main train station. It takes approximately 30 minutes on the bus (not accounting for traffic). There's a bus every 20 minutes or so. 5 euros each way.
CL is right...there is a bus from the central station to malpensa. I was easier for us to take the train from cordona. 11 euro. I am sure if you had to or wanted to leave from central that the bus will be just fine. FYI, even on a fast train with a pretty much straight-line run from cordona to malpensa, the ride was a half hour.
Lori,
You have to wait for luggage, 15 - 20 minute, walk through customs, nothing to declare 0 minutes, and bus to centrale, about an hour.
