transit milano to venice to stop or not to stop!!

I am arriving in italy - milan at 8am - with my actual destination being venice (long story) My question is - whilst i really do want to get to venice ( i would have come off a flight from hong kong) - whether to just jump on a train to venice and just get there...... or... to take a couple of hours and visit the Duomo and then head to Venice. And if i take that option - is it realistic to plan that all going well i could do this and be on a 2.30 train to Venice in on the same day. I have to get to Venice that day.
thank you very much

We did much the same arrival and route last year. We arrived MXP at 0830 and were in Venice by 1500. I'd say go right to Venice. You will be tired. There is now a train from MXP to Venice, connecting through Centrale, so you don't have to bother with the bus. The duomo is lovely, but not, IMHO, worth delaying your arrival in Venice.

Hi Laurel - thank you for that advice - very kind Next question ;) did you pre-book your train ticket to venice or just buy it from a ticket booth. I understand they are self service kiosks I think that is probably what i will do as the more i think about it - alot of running around - and perhaps just enjoy venice more

We bought the train ticket on arrival. I was worried about pre-booking because if our flight was late, we'd lose the ticket. Have no fear! The ticket machines have an English option. Venice is a lovely place to recover from jet lag. Wadner aroundm find a nice spot for dinner, wander some more. Be sure to buy a vaporetto pass before you travel. You'll save some money. http://www.veniceconnected.com/node/1454
