Transit from Dolomites to Belluno in Veneto -- help!

I'm banging my head against a wall trying to figure out how to get from the Dolomites to the town of Belluno.

I don't need to go to Belluno - but I need to get from the Dolomites to the train line that leads to Udine and Trieste. It's incredibly hard without taking trains all the way to Verona, or Villach -- both 5+ hours out of the way. By car, Belluno should be only an our or two.

Does anyone have a suggestion? Rome to Rio says there is a bus from Trento to Belluno, which should do fine, except it seems to a "one per day and only in a leap year" bus.

On your previous post you were asking about transportation options from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Belluno, is this still the case?

Hopefully others will chime in with transportation options tomorrow.

Thanks Priscilla - This website is very helpful. Yes, I was asking about Cortina, but only because that is the hub of the bus line that i referenced in the other post. Generally I'm just trying to solve the question of how to get efficiently from the Dolomites to Friuli via EAST rather than going down to the Verona-venice rail artery. It seems like the best route to do the former is to somehow to get to Ponte delle Alpi (near Calalzo) and take the train to Udine. This may be impractical and slow, however.

There was once a little and slow railway running Calalzo-Cortina-Dobbiaco, that was closed in 1964 (but you can still see the train in The Pink Panther that was filmed in 1963 in Cortina). As the railway closed it was substituted by bus services, and due to the regionalization of bus services the route got split in Cortina, but there should be relatively frequent buses between Cortina and Calalzo station. From there you can get service to Belluno - or go to Udine changing in Ponte delle Alpi and Conegliano.

asps2 - thanks - I had figured out most of this by myself but your description is reassuring.

I'm so curious about the Dobbiaco-Cortina-Calalzo bike trail. I'm not a cyclist, but I wonder if any parts of it are walkable? Do you know it well? and, would you recommend going just for a hike and to enjoy the scenery? I googled it, and I love the little station houses that I see in pics. Perhaps this would be a fun activity prior to arriving in Calalzo to catch the train to Udine.

J,

I just realized that the link I sent you on my previous post (showing the train schedule from Calalzo to Udine) only stays open for a few minutes.

It sounds like you're already figuring out your transportation options :-)
