Transfers from Rome to ship??

All,

We are going on a cruise that leaves Rome Civitavecchia. We will need transfers back & forward from Rome.
Getting the transfers from the ship is costly and someone said to wait until you get to Rome to purchase. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Hi ptab49,
I agree -- the cost of ship transfers are ludicrous.

We've done that run a few times, but never by private transfer. We've always done it independently, via train. Having said that, we were 1) travelling with only "carry-on", 2) very frugal, 3) "independent" to a fault. So, unless you are similar, I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing it that way. LOL. The main issues are: 1) you must take multiple modes of transporation... train, then bus or taxi at the port end, 2) you might have to deal with the pickpocket/scam issue on the public transportation while you're encumbered and distracted with your luggage, and 3) the train station in Civi doesn't have an elevator so, depending on which tracks you arrive/depart on, you might have to lug bags up and down stairs to go under the tracks. But, it IS the most affordable, and we will be doing it again when we disembark in Civi again this October. :-)

I have a co-worker will be taking their first cruise this September, and it will be their first time in Italy, etc. etc. and I have actually recommended to him to just book a private transfer in advance. It is easy to find good reviews on TripAdvisor. Last year, we broke down and booked a private transfer in Athens, and it was soooooo pleasant. No stress, no concerns about pickpockets, and the driver had excellent English and was very informative.

I'm sorry I can't give you a straight recommendation -- I'm sure if you google civitavecchia port transfer you'll find lots of info.

Enjoy your cruise, and your pre- and post- stays!

I did the train from Termini and walked from the station to the ship. It is about a 20 minute or so walk. We took the metro from the Via Veneto to termini. It wasn't hard and I was a novice at the time. I can't give you specifics on which train to take. Someone else will jump in and will give you specifics, I am sure.

They have relocated the entrance to the port, so it is significantly farther from the train station, now, than it was a couple of years ago.

We used Romecabs. Very reliable and great service. Highly recommended by many on this forum.

After a long flight, some jet lag, not being familiar with the area, there is nothing better than having your private driver meet you inside the terminal and whisk you to the cruise port. It is not the cheapest way, but it is definitely the best. It will be expensive but not as much as the cruise line charges. We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service (not a cab company) and we always use them to and from the airport to Rome itself and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey but not in advance.

Having said that, it is easy to get there by train and much cheaper. Just depends on how much luggage you have. If you decide to do the train, let us know and those on the forum can pretty much walk you through the process.

The fee since Civit... is about an hour from Rome will be in the range of 100 to perhaps 150 euro from Rome. You should arrange it in advance. The train will be around 10, 12euro/person.

We found it to be long hot walk from the train station. Note that your car service will likely not be allowed onto the pier. They'll have to drop you at the port-operated shuttle bus station, which is where you'd walk to from the train station. There is a city bus from the train, but maybe only every half hour. The train is dirt cheap, but takes about an hour, depending on local/express. At least three possible departure stations in Rome.

You have to think about your plane time if that's the disembarcation destination. If you don't use the ship's overpriced car service to the airport, you might, again, have to wait for bags to be put under the shuttle bus, go to the bus circle where they drop you off, to get the black-car.

I don't mean to sound whiny, but this is a very difficult port transfer. We once got a free transfer from our hotel because we stayed three nights - but that was an online deal with the original room booking.

Also get a quote from Bob's Limos (romelimousines.com). Efficient, good communicators, reasonably priced.
