I will be arriving in Rome June 2, 2013. Would like to know which would be best as far as transfers from airport shuttle vs private. We are staying near the Vatican. There will be 2 traveling.
Marta, With only two travelling, my suggestion would be to take the Leonardo Express (train) to Roma Termini and then take a Taxi from there to your hotel. Fare on the L.E. is currently at €14 PP (AFAIK) and travel time to Termini is 35 minutes, with no worries about traffic. You can buy your ticket at the airport station, either from a staffed ticket office or via one of the automated Kiosks. One important note to mention - you MUST validate your tickets in the track side machine prior to boarding the train or risk a hefty fine, which will be collected on the spot! Fines start at €50 PP and increase from there. There's a Taxi stand outside the front entrance of Termini. With your back to the tracks, walk straight ahead and out the front doors. I find that when I'm tired and jet lagged, I'm looking for easiest solution to get to my hotel, and that's the method I normally use. Buon Viaggio!
Since you are staying near the Vatican, another alternative would be to take the local train (same place as L Express) for 8E to St. Peters and your hotel could be a short walk or take a taxi from there. And, of course, the taxi is available at a fixed rate of 48E.
Leonardo Express Train from FCO to Termini for two (14x2=28 euro) + taxi from Termini station to Vatican hotel (at least 15 euro) is going to cost you about as much as the taxi all the way from the airport to the hotel (48 euro). I would take a taxi from the airport, especially if you have a bunch of luggage. But Frank's suggestion of taking the local train to San Pietro station (instead of the Leonardo Express) then a short taxi ride from there, might be an alternative if you want to save some money (maybe 20 or 25 euro less).
