Transfers between terminals at Rome Airport

Good Evening,

I will be going on my first trip overseas to Italy. It is mind blowing how many details I need to take into consideration. I travel every summer but stay in the U.S. I am flying into Rome on June 1 at 12 pm. I need to get down to tropea at a reasonable hour. Driving is out. My thought is to fly to Lamezia Terme since I will already be at the Rome airport. Then catch a train in Lamezia Terme to Tropea. Depending on the time I get in, hotel will provide transportation. I have a choice of two flights. 1:25 pm or 5:30 pm. I am doing only carry on luggage-No check ins. The 1:25 pm flight will allow me some extra time to get to the train at the end of the trip. The 5:30 pm flight would give me extra time at Rome airport but it leaves me scrambling at the end.

What should I do? Is it possible for me to go from terminal 3 to terminal 1 on Altaltia airlines if my flight comes in at 12 pm. Again, I only have carry on luggage. How much time do I need to allow at the Rome airport?

This will the first of many questions to come.

Thanks
Jennifer

A scheduled arrival at noon, (presumably from the US?) and attempting to make a separately booked flight 85 minutes later has DISASTER written all over it.

If you try to do it, be prepared to buy a walk up priced ticket for a later flight.

Choose the 5:30 flight because you will not make the 1:25. If your flight arrives on time, you’ll first have to go through passport control. Depending on what the passenger load is when you arrive, this may take an hour or more. You will then have to walk to terminal 1 and check in at Alitalia then go through security.

Bring a book. Relax with a great espresso and a cornetto and be overjoyed that you are in Italy!

With your 5:30 flight arriving around 19:00, you should have time to take the 5 minute taxi to Lamezia Terme Central and easily make the
21:04 train to Tropea. This train reaches Tropea at the same time as the 20:37.

Is it reasonable to think that if I land at 7 PM, could I take a taxi and catch the 7:42 train

Land where?

Well, it probably does not matter, as I cannot imagine an airport anywhere that one could land, deplane, get through the terminal, take a taxi to a train station and board a train and do it all in just 42 minutes.

Jennifer,

While it might, if the travel gods smile on you,
the probability is rather small. At least you know you have the option of a later train.

Hi

Thank you everyone. I am new to traveling overseas. In the U.S, I can easily hop off the plane, run to shuttle and be at my hotel within an hr. I am realizing that it is not the case with Italy. It looks like I will fly into Rome at 12 PM. Stay around the airport. Board flight to Lamezia terme at 5:20 PM. Arrive around 6:30 PM. Grab taxi or take train to train station. Board 7:42 train to Tropea. Take short cab to timeshare. Getting in around 9 PM. Since I am traveling since 5 PM from the day before. I will be traveling for 28 hrs. I am assuming that I will stay around the timeshare the next day to get my bearings. Going to love jet lag.

If I go through customs in Rome, will I do it again when I land in Lamezia terme. Do I go through customs in London, Rome or both.

Thanks again for helping me figure this out.

If all you do is change planes in London ( on a single US-London-Rome ticket) you will go through a security check in London as you move from the arrival to departure gate. In Rome you will do passport control and customs. In Lamezia you will just walk off the plane and walk out of the airport.

Yeah. The flight from JFK to Heathrow to Rome is on one ticket. I land at 7 am in London and leave at 8:30 am. I guess Rome is where I need to allow enough time.

Customs is nothing in Italy--you walk through a door/corridor. There's no baggage inspection, no customs form, niente. The only thing is passport control, and that can take 5 minutes or half an hour. I don't really know; I haven't gone through the non-EU citizens line.

.... and that can take 5 minutes or half an hour...... Or two and half hours as it did a couple years ago on Saturday morning from NY. I would allow at least an hour.

Is this in Rome or Heathrow. I will have 1 1/2 hr layover in Heathrow and 5 hrs in Rome

Frank is referring to Rome. I've had the same experiences he has 1/2 hour to almost 3 hours.
