Transferring at Milano Centrale on Monday early afternoon from Varenna (regionalle) to Torino (Frec.). My choice of transfer times are 15 minutes. 25 minutes or 2 hours 10 minutes. I'd like to take the 25 minutes one. Enough time considering it's Italy?
Plenty, in my limited experience. If it is all on one ticket, even if the inbound were late enough to miss the connection, there is at least 1 Freccia per hour to Torino, usually more. Then it should be a matter of getting a new seat reservation for the Freccia.
What do you mean, considering it's Italy? I would take the 25 minute one, just to be calm and maybe have some time to buy a bottle of water in centrale.
Trains are usually on time , or up to 5 minutes late, with exceptions obviously, but it's not the norm.
A friend of mine who is from the area about halfway between Milano and Torino told me to forget the 15 minute but should be okay for the 25 minute one.
He was the one who said it's Italy and don't expect the regional trains to always be on time.
I also have to buy them as two separate tickets. For some reason, the Trenitalia website doesn't show the 25 minute change when I put in Varenna to Torino. But when I try them as separate tickets they show up.
If you buy them as separate tickets, I am not sure about getting a free ticket change if the Regionale is severely delayed. I know there are several situations where there are Freccia trains to Torino that leave 7 to 10 minutes apart. Trenitalia, unlike Deutsche Bahn, gives no means of adjusting transfer times. So I would take the 15 minute connection on a single ticket knowing I have recourse to get put on another train in case of delayed inbound train.
