Transfer time on a separate ticket?

Hi. Traveling from Dulles to Rome via Madrid in Sept. on a mileage ticket on Iberia Air. Once in Rome, we have a separate ticket to Sicily via Air Italia (different airline/fully different ticket). We have about a 2 hour window. We are not checking bags.

Q4: will we do immigration in Madrid? Once in Rome, will we need to go through customs and exit the airport — then re-check in for our separate flight? Or if we have our boarding passes, can we stay within the airport and just go to our separate flight?

Any input is helpful! Thanks!

Leslie,
Yes, you will go through immigration/passport control in Madrid, since that’s your entry point from the U.S.

I’ve flown to/from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, but have not had any connecting flights there, but according to the information found on this website, www.adr.it/flight connections, you do not need to go through security (because you’ll be coming from Madrid, Spain) before
your flight to Sicily.

For passengers connecting within the Schengen Countries security checks are not required.

However, if you were flying directly from the U.S. to Rome (FCO), you would have to go through passport control, and security, before going to your connecting gate.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy your time in beautiful Sicily!
