Transfer in FCO from Terminal 3 (Arrival from US) to Terminal 1-Domestic flight to Palermo

We are coming in on Delta in a couple of days from JFK to FCO (early morning) then connecting on Alitalia to go from FCO to Palermo. No checked bags-Carry-On only. We will also already have our boarding passes for the flight from FCO to PMO. Do we clear immigration and customs in FCO or at PMO?

If we do go through immigration and customs in FCO (since we don’t need to pick up checked luggage and we will already have our FCO to PMO boarding passes), do we stay inside security during our walk from T3 to T1 or do we have to exit T-3 into the public area of Arrivals and then re-enter through security again at T-1 for Departures?

Also, any advice on how long we should allow for customs and immigration clearance, if we do that at FCO?

Do we clear immigration and customs in FCO or at PMO? You will clear Schengen immigration in FCO, and 'customs' is in Palermo but is just a walk-through by the 'nothing to declare' signage. Usually when you're continuing on another flight, you don't exit security, but I'm not positive about FCO. You didn't mention how long you have between flights, but immigration could be 5 minutes or 50 min, but it's late in the year so hopefully less! It's great you've got both tickets on one itinerary & boarding passes ahead of time, so much easier.

I did just that in April, and though I don’t remember Immigration….it must have been easy to be so unmemorable….I will tell you that it was a very long walk indeed to the gates for Palermo from where we landed from Canada.
Depending on your connection time, walk fast!
I only had 70 minutes, and made it , but it was a long way.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It seems like you may have gone through a quick scan at Passport control, but then stayed “inside security” when you went from one Terminal to the other.

I appreciate the information

I recently arrived at FCO on an ITA nonstop from LAX. Note that you should be arriving at the international E gates within terminal 3. What surprised me was that we deplaned to the gate area, instead of being quarantined until immigration. So we walked by the other gates and all the food stalls and shopping in the very large international wing.

I was following the signs for exit and baggage claim - there was also signage for transfers to the A gates, which I assume you would follow for your flight to Palermo. When we finally reached immigration, there was a long row of electronic passport kiosks - no waiting at all - this was late morning.

Based on what I saw, there's a good chance you will stay airside during your transfer. If FCO works like Heathrow, you may go through another security screening.

Is your plan Delta 182 arriving at 8:25AM and then the ITA 1785 departing at 10:45AM?

Assuming an on time ( or nearly so) arrival you should be fine, even if you have to clear security between the terminals.

I have only arrived/departed FCO, so have no insight on transfers.

Will your carry-on conform to ITA's restrictions?

Yes, We do arrive in FCO on Delta 182 @ 8:25am (likely in T3-E24), but have a little more time for the transfer to (likely) T1. We will take ITA 1781 (likely in the A-40s)@ 1:15pm to PMO. It looks like we will have more than enough time for the transfer. Information on Passport Control and Customs was also useful.

Yes, We have been VERY careful about the restrictive ITA baggage requirements, especially the weight requirements.

When I checked in for my ITA flight to Rome at LAX they were weighing carry on bags - I believe they refused one person in front of me. My friends were on an ITA flight Miami to Rome at the same time - they said their bags were a bit over 8 kilos but the gate attendant let them through.
