Transfer from Venice Hotel to Airport

We have an 11am flight back home from Venice in early June and I have a couple of questions.
Suggestions on best/surest way to get to airport? Also, how long should we allow at the airport before our flight? I seem to remember from our last Italy trip that boarding began close to an hour before our scheduled departure.

Thanks
Jonathan

Jonathan,

You need to check-in at least 2- 3 hours prior to your flight.-- info from website given below:

" Some airlines (such as KLM, Air France, and Delta) require you to
check in at an automated kiosk or online before taking your luggage to
the counter. We like to check in at a kiosk at least three hours
before flight time, which ensures that we're near the head of the line
when the counter opens."

Edit: This info is from the Venice Airport official website: http://www.veniceairport.it/en/at-the-airport/check-in-and-bag-drop.html

When to arrive

For domestic departures you should report to the check-in area at
least 1 hour before take-off.

For international departures you should
report to the check-in area at least 2 hours before take-off.

There are three basic ways to get from Venice to the airport:

  1. Water taxi. Expensive (~€100), but easy and convenient, as it will pick up from a dock at or very close to your hotel.
  2. Alilaguna. This is a boat that makes a few stops in Venice before going to the airport (there are several routes). One way fare is around €14. More information: http://www.alilaguna.it/en
  3. Vaporetto and then bus (or taxi). You can take a standard vaporetto (the "water bus" that is the mainstay of Venice transportation) to Piazzale Roma. From P. Roma, you can take a bus (cheap) or a land taxi (not cheap) to the airport.

Be sure you know exactly what you are doing. Are you taking a direct flight from Venice to the US or a connecting flight from Venice to somewhere else for your direct flight home? The first is an international flight and requires an earlier check-in. The second is a domestic flight that doesn't need a long check in.

Unless you will already have a Vaporetto pass, the Alilaguna would make more sense if the times

work with your flight. Ticket is 14 E, you get on at your hotel and off at the airport.

With the vaporetto 7E and the bus 6E you get on and off the Boat and then on and of the bus.

Not worth the euro savings in my book.

There is actually a 12 euro combined vaporetto plus bus ticket. The Alilaguna costs 15 euro spur of the moment, can take a long time if it makes a lot of stops from where you board. If it has already made numerous stops before your pick up point, it can be quite crowded or even impossible to board. It drops you at the ferry dock which is still 1/3 of a mile from the airport. The bus drops you right at the front door of the airport.
Check schedules from your boarding point to make an informed decision. www.actv.it

Yes it matters if you are connecting in Europe or flying to N.A. Was just there on Tuesday for a connection home via Zurich, walked in the door at 8:00 for a 9:45 am flight, was checked in by 8:20, through security by 8:30, sipping my first espresso by the gate at 8:40. Your mileage may vary.
