Will be arriving in Siena from CT by train. Staying near the Baptistry. 5 people…..is taxi our only option? I have asked owner and he said taxi.
Taxi or pre-booked limo service (NCC or Noleggio Con Conducente in Italian).
The other option would be a long uphill walk.
Taxi or your feet
I believe there is a series of escalators that will take you up to town
Is there no metro or subway?
No metro or subway in Siena. Your options are walk, taxi - maybe two if you are five people with luggage, or bus.
The train station is at the bottom of the hill and there are escalators to help with the ascent to town but if you are on the far side of the town I would recommend a taxi if you have luggage.
Some people prefer the bus into Siena because it drops you much closer to the center of town.
Enjoy Siena,

Siena has a population of just over 50,000 and is not a suburb of any major metropolitan area.
I don't know of any towns of that size in the world that would have a subway. If it weren't for the tourists there would be no taxi service either. There are buses, however, which you can take from the station, which go up to piazza Gramsci, from which you can walk on fairly flat terrain.
You don't say where you are coming from. Have you already purchased the train tickets? Many take a bus to Siena since the bus lets off at the top of the hill Siena sits on.
Laura,
With five people plus luggage, I'd suggest using a taxi as it will be the easiest and quickest option. The driver should be able to drop you off right at your hotel, or at least close. There may be taxis waiting when your train arrives? It's not a long trip and with five people sharing the cost, it shouldn't be expensive. I definitely wouldn't want to be fussing with escalators when I'm hauling luggage.
Siena is a hill town and the station is located at the bottom of the hill, so there's no Metro or Subway. I suppose the cost of a Funicular up to the town as is used in Orvieto would be prohibitive. I vaguely recall that there used to be a bus from the station to town, but I haven't checked on that recently.
This may help...... https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Siena-Station/Siena .
A metro in a town of 50,000 ? Maybe in Dubai, but both trains and subways hate climbing the mountains. "Hill town" means "slopes".
You can choose between buses, cabs and the public escalators that are 5 minutes away from the train station.
Ken, Giancarlo De Carlo is the only architect who tried to propose to build a Naples-style funicular in Siena in the 70s. They soon discovered that the big problem in central, uptown Siena was building a modern funicular without destroying something old. And yes, the costs were exorbitant compared to a system of buses, public escalators and lifts. I'd really like to see a Minimetro in Siena like the one in Perugia, but...
Take a taxi (you might need two). When you exit the train station turn right and you will see the sign for the taxi stand. As others have said you could walk, but even from the top of the escalator it would be a long walk (30+ mins.). Especially if you are not sure where you are going. A taxi should cost around 15 euros. Get to your lodging and then enjoy the streets of Siena. It is our favorite town.
