We will be staying in Montecatini for 1 week, near the Centro train station, and need to transfer to Florence (FLR) airport for a reasonable fee for 2 adults (seniors). Anyone have any thoughts. Thank you in advance.
Easiest may be to take the train to Florence, 5.20 euro pp, then a cab from SMN to the airport, about 15 euro. There is also hourly bus from SMN to the airport at 6 euro pp.
Gary, the important questions here are 1) what time is your flight? and, 2) are you attempting to get to the FLR airport from Montecatini on the same day? For the answer to question 2, unless your flight is in the late morning (i.e. after 10:00am) or in the afternoon, you will not, in any way, make it to the airport on the same morning as your flight using any kind of public transportation. You might be able to do it using a private taxi or private transfer service. Please advise on the flight time and where you are staying the night before your flight if the departure time is before 10:00am.
You can take a taxi or a private transfer (a.k.a. in Italian as NCC, or Noleggio Con Conducente, Lease with driver).
The cost will be about 80 to 90 euro ($120) for 2 people.
The public transportation options are the following, however consider that those may not be convenient depending on the time of your flight:
BUS: Lazzi Company. The timetable is below, the Airport stop is called "Firenze A.11"

The cost is Euro 5/per personTrain to Florence, then Taxi or Bus (there is no train station at the airport.
If you go all the way to Firenze SMN station (Florence central station) the train ticket is also around 5 euro per person, but then you need to add the taxi ride, which, during the day time, is 20 euro (plus baggage fee of 1 euro a piece).
The closest station to the airport is however Firenze-Castello, which is along the Montecatini-Florence line. It's a small commuter station and there is a taxi stand there, however no guarantee there will be a taxi waiting there since the traffic is limited to local commuters. So you might have to ask someone to call a taxi for you. From there to the airport is a 5 min ride, probably around 10 euro. In terms of time since the train ride is a few minutes shorter than going all the way to the central station and the taxi ride is also very short, you might save time, but only if the taxi is readily available at that small station.
If your flight is early in the morning or if you have more than just carry on luggage, you should consider splurging in a taxi or private transfer (about 80-90 euro)
