Transfer from CIVITAVECCHIA to ROMA AURELIA

We hit Port Civitavecchia 4/30/2012. Our lodging is in Roma Aurelia. Auto transfer is over 150 euro and the train is about 4-5 euro. How difficult is it to ride the local rail with luggage?

Not at all since a lot of people do it when they get off the cruise. We have done about ten times and only twice have had to sit on our luggage for a while until a seat became available. You would need to take a local or regional train and get off at San Pierro. Do not go all the way into Termini. Also buy your ticket prior to getting to Civit.... Get an open 2nd class ticket so you get on any local train. BE absolutely sure to validate the ticket in the little yellow boxes or you could be very unhappy. You could also get off at Trastevere which is a little further in case your train doesn't stop at SP.

Steven, the Roma Aurelia station is the 7th stop on most of the FR5 trains running from Civitavecchia. If you look at this article, which is geared for a one-day round-trip, there is a map showing the train stations. Riding the train is easy - dragging your luggage probably will not be. Be prepared to stand. We often have to stand in the entry doorways with our large pieces - or sit on them. The FR5 is primarily a commuter line so the train cars are not equipped to handle huge luggage pieces. But it's only about 46 minutes from Civitavecchia to the Roma Aurelia station. And it will only cost about €4.10 per person. We've been on this train often and if it's mid-morning - after rush hour - you will have better seating availability. It is "open seating" as Frank points out so you do have to validate your ticket and run for a seat! If you're headed to the Holiday Inn, it's a little bit of a hike from the rail station. It's a working class section of town; safe but not too pretty.

We are staying at the Melia Roma and planning to take a taxi from the train station to the Melia. 8euro is better than 170 euro.
