What is the best way to transfer from the Rome airport (FCO) to the Florence airport? The situation is one friend arriving in Rome and needing to meet another friend at the Florence airport to pick up the rental car. Prefer not to go into the city of Florence to do that (ZTL phobia). Timing is midday or early afternoon. A cab is the obvious but expensive option, but I'm interested in others, including time required and cost. Thanks!

It is several hour trip to Florence from the Rome airport. You need to take the train, Leonard Express, to Termini - allow an hour. Then a train to Florence and from there to the airport. A lot depends on the timing of the trains and how long you have to wait between trains, etc. Cost will depend on a number of factors.

Angela, The cost for a Taxi from Rome to Florence would likely be HUGE, so the option suggested by Frank is also what I'd recommend. The Leonardo Express makes the trip from FCO to Termini in about 35 minutes (frequent departures - DON'T forget to validate!). The Freccia train from Termini to Firenze SMN is about 1.5 hours (again, frequent departures). From Firenze SMN, the easiest way to get to the airport is probably via ATAF-SITA "Volo in bus" service (departures every 30 minutes). As you'll be using a rental car, be sure that each driver has the compulsory International Driver's Permit. Happy travels!

The Leonardo Express runs twice/hour from FCO to Roma Termini. Depart at 12:08, 12:38, 13:08, 13:38, etc. The fare is €14.00. If you take the 12:08 train, you'll get to Termini in time to catch the 12:55 high-speed train to Florence which arrives at 14:22. If you take the 12:38 train, you can catch the 13:25 high-speed train which arrives in Florence at 14:51. The base (standard) 2nd class fare is €43.00. For detailed timetables and fares, go to trenitalia.com. According to the Florence airport web site, buses from the city center to the airport run twice/hour on the hour and half hour. The bus station is adjacent to the train station. No fare is given. According to the same site, the fare for a taxi to the airport is a fixed rate of €20.00.
