We are traveling to Italy in January. We are taking a drive (we are considering hiring a driver rather than renting a car for one day) from the airport at Fiumicino (day after arrival) to one or two Etruscan sites, maybe civita Bagnoreggio, ending at Orvieto. After that we want to get on a train to Venice. (Yes, we know it may be cold up north, but all four of us are determined to see Venice!) Where can we get the best connections for the fast trains? I haven't had much luck trying the train websites using Chiusi, Orte, Orvieto, etc., probably because it is too soon to reserve tickets? (Or are the trenitalia and raileurope websites just not working right?)We were trying to avoid driving all the way to Florence. Can anyone advise?
If you are intent on taking one of the fast ES trains, you will need to connect in either Florence or Bologna. But your "best bet" is actually to take the DIRECT Intercity (IC) train "Matilde Serao" which departs Orvieto at 11:50 and arrives at Venice S. Lucia at 16:49 (no train changes whatsoever). This is also your cheapest option: the cost of an (automatically reserved) second class seat on the IC train is a mere 34 Euros.
Thanks for the info, GAC. Sounds like a good alternative, short of revising our plans and driving into Florence.
