My husband and I are going to Germany on business the last week of June. We would then like to spend 5-7 nights in Italy. Has anyone taken the train from Frankfurt to Florence? Would it be better to fly directly to Rome? We are planning to fly home from Rome. Any suggestions on a travel route would be greatly appreciated.
I have never been able to get a good night's sleep on a night train but other travelers love them. I would fly RyanAir to Pisa and then train to Florence. Ryan Air has cheap flights but be sure to check the luggage restrictions!
Travel time on the train from Frankfurt to Florence is 12.0-14.0 hours. City Night Line (CNL) does have night train runs. For Ryan Air mentioned above, note that Ryan Air does not fly out of any large major airport. For Frankfurt, it's Frankfurt-Hahn. Hahn is 90-120 minutes out of Frankfurt. They do fly into Pisa which is also about 90 minutes out of Florence by train.
You can also fly into Rome but once again, not on RyanAir. RyanAir flies into Ciampino which again, is 90 minutes out of Rome. And, it will be about 100 minutes into Florence by high-speed Eurostar. The difference between Rome and Pisa, however, is the cost. The high-speed train from Rome to Florence is about 36Euro. For Pisa to Florence, there is no Eurostar and the cost is about 12Euro.
Also as mentioned above, if you wish to fly RyanAir or any of the economy airlines, read the luggage rules carefully. They can bite your wallet.
