Trains to Cinque Terra

Are there trains that go from Rome to Cingue Terra? If so, about how long does it take and what town does it get you closest to? What approximately does it cost? Thank you

Hi 3ddana -
The Cinque Terre is an Italian National Park comprised of 5 villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. There is only 7 miles between most southern of them to the most northern. There is no train from Rome that will get you directly to any of them without at least 1 if not 2 train changes somewhere along the way: most likely in Florence and/or La Spezia. Prices will vary depending on which available options you choose.

You can explore your options here, using "Roma Termini" as your station of departure and the names of any of the 5 villages as your destination.

Trains within the CT itself cost 4 euro per ride during high season, and tickets MUST be validated before boarding, as do tickets for any regionale trains from Rome to the region.

Just in case your were thinking of doing it, the CT is not a day-trip from Rome: it's much too far.

You can search the train schedules up to the next timetable change, which means between 15 and 180 days in advance, not 60 or 90 days.

Hi,
I thought the train from Rome to La Spezia is a little over 4 hours and then a transfer to Riomaggiore.
If we leave Rome in the morning, we can't make it by mid to late afternoon?

A quick look at the train schedule for next week (I'd guess unlikely to change much going forward) shows you can get from Rome to Riomaggiore in about four hours with only one change at La Spezia. There's even one early in the morning that makes the entire trip in 3:27.

Yes you can. If you were referring to my comment about the CT not being a day trip from Rome, that was for the OP. It was unclear from his or her question if they were going there for an overnight stay or trying to do it in both directions from Rome in one day.

3ddana,

As the others have said, it's very easy to get from Rome to any of the five Cinque Terre towns. There are numerous departures every day from Roma Termini to La Spezia Centrale. Once you arrive in La Spezia, you'll change trains and it's only a few minutes from there to any of the towns. Note that some trains on that route will have two changes and those will take slightly longer.

One of the quickest trips will be a departure at 09:57, arriving La Spezia at 14:03 (time 4H:06M). From there it's only about nine minutes to Riomaggiore (the most southerly town) or 23 minutes to Monterosso (the most northerly town). The train from La Spezia to the five towns will be a Regionale so as others have mentioned, you MUST validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot.

If you're planning to stay in the Cinque Terre for a few days, that's an easy trip.

If you go to google maps (maps.google.com) and input "Cinque Terre, Italy," or one of the towns in the Cinque Terre, click the "directions" button, and input "Rome," it will give you your transportation options a map, show you what towns you go through, and where you need to make connections.
