Milan airport to Trastevere rome( can't book ahead due to traveling g from Us).
Trastevere Rome to florwnce(Uffizi). Can pre purchase if necessary
Uffizi to Venice ( staying 2 miles outside of Venice- Hilton) can pre purchase
I woul d like to take the fastest trains! 😃
In general, try the Italia rail site for train times in Italy. https://www.italiarail.com/
Depending on departure times you will find different "fastest" trains.
Actually the Italian rail company site is
www.trenitalia.com
The website Italiarail is a US based travel agency.
You can find schedules, prices in the Trenitalia site. You can purchase ahead if you want discounted prices ( Economy and SuperEconomy). However discounted fares come with restrictions and once booked a specific train you can't change the ticket or get refunded.
due to traveling g from Us
sorry - what do you mean?
When searching schedules and prices you need to use the Italian names of city stations.
Milan airport: MALPENSA AEROPORTO
Milan Central station: MILANO CENTRALE
Venice: VENEZIA SANTA LUCIA
Florence: FIRENZE SANTA MARIA NOVELLA
Rome: ROMA TERMINI. Trastevere is a district of Rome, which also has a local station, however the main station in Rome is Termini, that is where fast trains go.
Please check a map and plan your itinerary so that you don't do a lot of backtracking back and forth.
Thank you! I didn't wanted to precook the first train in case there are flight delays😩
I am sure that the passengers on the first train will appreciate not being precooked (my kind of typo)!
Venice ( staying 2 miles outside of Venice- Hilton)
If you are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Venice Mestre San Giuliano, you will want to get off at Venice Mestre. Get a taxi from there. There is a bus to Venice Pazzale Roma on the street outside the hotel.
If you are staying at the Hilton Molino Stucky, get off at the end of the line at Venezia Santa Lucia. It is a bit of logistics to get to the hotel as it is located on Giudecca Island.
we just used rick steves online I entered travel dates in the order of our trip travelers named and rec'd train times and options - chose what worked best for our checkin-check out plans hit enter and was able to purchase all train tickets at once for our family. if there was a sur charge for this it was nominal. super easy. I have my email receipt and printed boarding passes. I created a schedule made a off of it to review with my husband and the next day I went back to order the tickets and found that they "Held on" to the tentative itinerary (there is a time limit) so all I did was review and purchase.
Thank you, I don't see the Rick Stevens online for tickets?
Don't use Rick Steves for tickets (sorry Rick). Use Trenitalia link Roberto cited. They run the trains. RS site is just a link to Rail Europe, which with all due respect, you don't want to use.
Start with the Trenitalia website: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Even though it starts in English, you need the Italian names of the stations, which Roberto gave you. Here they are again for convenience:
Milan airport: MALPENSA AEROPORTO
Milan Central station: MILANO CENTRALE
Venice: VENEZIA SANTA LUCIA
Florence: FIRENZE SANTA MARIA NOVELLA
Rome: ROMA TERMINI.
Each city has multiple train stations, all with the city name. So for instance, there's Milano Centrale, Milano Porta Genova, Milano Cadorna, and many more. The ones in the list above are the stations that are close to the centers and get high speed trains, so these are the ones you want.
Look at each of your trips one at a time on your travel dates, and you'll see the options for trains.
Note that if you're flying nonstop from the US to Milan, you will land at Malpensa. If you're changing planes in Europe to get there, you may land in Malpensa or Linate. Let us know which one it is, so we can give step-by-step directions. You are correct, you do not want to pre-purchase this ticket, since you don't know how long it will take to get out of the airport.
For your other tickets, if you are ready to commit to non-exchangeable and non-refundable tickets, you can buy them in advance for a large discount. If you don't want to commit, or if you don't mind the full price (see next paragraph), you can wait until you get to Italy.
When you look at the Trenitalia website, you will see three fares: Super Economy, Economy, and Base. Super Economy are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Economy can be exchanged once, but you pay any difference in fare. And Base fares are fully refundable and exchangeable (as long as you do so before the train on your ticket leaves), but these are not discounted, so there's no advantage buying them in advance. Once a fare sells out, it's gone, and only more expensive fares are left.
So, look at each of your routes, and see what the prices are, and then decide which tickets you want to buy.
As Sam said, if you tell us which Hilton you are using, people can give exact directions.
To get between Florence Santa Maria Novella station and the Uffizi Gallery area, it's easiest to take a taxi. I'd also take a taxi from Roma Termini station and Trastevere (particularly on arrival when you will be tired).
Thanks! We are non stop from Us to malpensa. We are staying st Venice mestre San Guilero. I was also wondering, if we shoukd stay at the hilton closer to the airport, Hilton Malpensa or Hilton Milan? Your thoughts please?
stay at the hilton closer to the airport, Hilton Malpensa or Hilton Milan?
Depends if you want to do anything in Milan and what time your departing flight is. The Hilton Garden Inn Malpensa is still 5 miles from the airport, but they do have a complimentary shuttle service.
The Milan Hilton is just a block from Milano Centrale station and the train to the airport goes twice an hour and takes about 50 minutes. It is also close to the Metro station to visit other sites in Milan.
Our flight leaves at 1:15. Therefore, i thought we should be at the airport bt 11:15. Is that correct? The day before is our travel day from Venice to Milan. We will have some time that day in Milan. I wasnt sure if i wanted to store my luggage at the train station, visit Milan and then go to the Hilton by the airport, or stay at Hilton Milan, closer to central but clise to train. I think Hilton Milan might be best. Thank you for all the helpful information! I really appreciate it😀
Yes, if your flight is at 1:15 pm, the Milan Hilton is the way to go. You can walk to the hotel from the train station and check in and leave your luggage there if it is too early to get your room. Next morning, the 9:25 Malpensa Express train will have you at the airport by 10:15.
There is a special check-in area at Malpensa for flights to the US (and Israel). It is to your left as you enter the airport from the train station. You will have to show you passport just to get into the room where the check-in desks are. After that, you go back to the main part and get in the security line for your gate.
trenitalia.com is the best site for Italian rail tickets. It's easy because you can choose the English option, but you do have to type in the Italian names of the train stations. You will be be emailed a paper ticket for any of the fast trains and won't have to pay a service charge. Their schedules are easy to read also.
