Trains ltaly

I have read that some trains stop for less than
approximately two minutes at stations.Think it would have been regional. Same happened in Vietnam, had to make sure you were ready with luggage.

True, not just regional trains, long distance trains can stop for 2 minutes, or 5 at major stops. Regional trains could stop for 1 minute or less.

What is your point? They just stop for as long as it takes for the passengers to get off and on, which may be only 1 or 2 passengers per door at smaller stations. Of course you have to be ready to get off or on when the train stops. There is no steward(ess) with a list of who gets off where to make sure you get off at the correct station.

I see you are from Australia, how long do trains stop at stations there?

Yes, you should be out of your seat and heading to the door before the train stops. In this way, it's more like taking a city bus than taking a plane where you're told to remain seat-belted until you come to a full and complete stop. See more tips for On the Train.

In au stations an attendant make sure commuters are all off ,before they flag train to leave

It's important to be at the door, or in a line-up near the door, by the time the train stops. If you don't get off the train quickly, you'll find people from the platform are boarding, and then it will be extremely difficult to get off. Plus, you'll be at least partially blocking their way and slowing down the boarding process.

In Italy conductors don't flag trains to leave if there is somebody getting on/off. What's the difference?

The trains always stop long enough for everyone to get on and off. You do have to be ready to depart as quickly as possible.

There aren't necessarily station staff to flag a train off, larger stations only. And not all trains have a conductor, many small local trains are driver only. The driver has mirrors or video to see down the side of the train.

  • The train stops, the doors open (often the passengers have to push a button or pull a lever to do this, but the button/lever doesn't work until the train has stopped and the driver presses a "release" button in the cab).
  • The passengers get off
  • As soon as the passengers stop getting off, the passengers on the platform start getting on.
  • As soon as the driver sees all the passengers have got on, (s)he presses the button to close and lock the doors, and starts off.

As you see, on smaller stations with only 1-2 passengers per door, this can all happen very fast.
If you are not standing up by the door waiting to get off by the time the train stops, passengers can be getting on the train and hindering you. Even worse, if you wait until the train stops and you decide whether this is the correct station, by the time you collect your luggage the train can start moving.

At large stations, trains stop longer. At terminal stations, like Florence and Rome where the train changes direction, it can be 5-10 minutes.

Finally nobody checks you get off at the correct station, it is your problem. Know when your train is due at your station, listen for announcements, and get up when other people start collecting their belongings.

Don't be the tourist that didn't get off the train at "Firenze Santa Maria Novella" station, because he wanted to go to Florence and it didn't say "Florence" on the station sign.

One of things we have always done is look at the board prior to boarding and make note of the stop before our final stop. When we see that stop posted in the car (if signs are available) or stop at that station, we know the next stop is ours. Then we take a clue from the other passengers. When they start moving so do we.

Sometimes in a really small station, your car may not stop by the platform. This happens in particular in the Cinque Terre. In such a situation, be aware you may have quite a jump to the ground.
