trains: Italotreno vs Trenitalio

Has anyone traveled on the Italotreno service Venice to Rome? I am considering using this train rather than Trenitalia, however not certain if it is much of an inconvenience to arrive in the Roma Tib rather than Termini, since I will need to take other transportation from either station as we will stay in a neighborhood near the Colosseum.

Hi Beth. They are similar. Italotreno is slightly nicer; trenitalia has much more frequent service. Roma tib is quick metro ride to Termini. Enjoy your trip!

I've taken Italo and Trenitalia - both are good. I've heard that Italo goes to Ostiense station as well as Tiburtina. You might check that station out as it is a short cab ride from there to the Colosseum (basically 2 stops on the metro). Cabs are usually available at the Ostiense station.

Thank you for your replies & advice.
Should I be concerned that the newer company has fewer trains, since our schedule is very tight...I hope to take a morning train so that we have the afternoon in Rome. We only have two full days in Rome and I count on having that afternoon to get our bearings. Have been to Rome once prior, several years ago, and now taking teenagers, so need to do the major sites.

The first Italotreno train leaves Venezia Santa Lucia at 09:55. It arrives at Roma Tiburtina at 13:30 and at Roma Ostiense at 13:50. Effective for 9 June and beyond, the first direct Trenitalia high-speed train leaves Venezia Santa Lucia at 06:13 and arrives at Roma Termini at 09:30. Later departure times are 06:50 (one connection in Verona), 08:35, and 09:25.

Beth, check both sites for both companies - you can see their schedules. Italo has much newer and high-tech trains.

Great: thanks everyone. We're set & should have a full afternoon! I opted for the Trenitalia, since I am ultra-conservative, and in the event there could be a strike or problem with trains it seems to have more options available (more departures) even though I really wanted to take the newer, fresher version...

Strikes are more likely to affect Trenitalia schedules, a public company, rather than Italo which is a private company.
