Trains in Sicily

While I see that Trenitalia has a decent service around Sicily, I'm wondering if anyone has recent experience taking trains there?
I have read some articles that say taking buses between towns is much more efficient.
Any insights?
Thank you.

It depends on where you are going. I was in Sicilia for for six weeks in
May-June this year. Major cities are well-served by trains, but buses may be more frequent, or serve cities and towns that trains no longer serve. If you post again with the places you plan to visit, we can be more helpful.

Renting a car may be a good option, too, for part of your travel. Roads are good, traffic is only terrible in Palermo, Catania and Siracusa.

I used both trains and buses where appropriate. It depends where the train station vs. the bus station(s) is/are relative to the center of town. If a train station is too far outside the historical center (or in the case of Taormina, at the bottom of a steep hill), then a bus that takes you more or less door-to-door is a better choice. So you should weigh each option for each city you want to visit. I was in southeastern Sicily and can tell you that the trains are pretty slow - 30 miles an hour local "Regionale" trains. I liked the buses better in general.
