Trains in Italy

My (adult) daughter & I will be going to Italy in May (2010). We are spending 2 nights in Rome, then plan to take the train to Pisa, then on to Florence where we will spend a night before continuing to Venice. Can we book travel on the train from Pisa to Venice and stopover in Florence for a night? Or do we need to buy each leg of the ticket separately. Also, is it better to buy our train tickets before we get there? (there will just be the 3 legs... Rome to Pisa, Pisa to Florence, Florence to Venice). Or shall we wait and buy the tickets there? Thanks & Aloha! - Kris

Kris,

As mentioned in the previous reply, it's very easy to buy tickets in Italy, either from a ticket agent or via automated Kiosks. You might find it helpful to research which trains you'd prefer on each leg of your trips. Check www.trenitalia.it/ for the details.

You might also have a look at the "Transportation" section at www.roninrome.com, as he has lots of helpful information listed.

Happy travels!

Be sure to reserve your train a couple days in advance if you need to travel on either Mother's Day weekend or Ascension Day weekend (13-16.5). I learned this the hard way in Spain, I suspect Italy might be the same.
