Trains fromNaples to Sorrento, Pompeii Amalfi Coast and back

We would be arriving in Naples from Rome by train at approx 10-11am. I am thinking that we would need to stay a night somewhere near Pompeii to get the most out of the area. Any suggestions. We then are catching train from Naples to Milazzo and then onto Lipari. Any further suggestions? The ferry from Naples to Lipari only runs on Tuesday and another dya which are not helpful.

Although I've always stayed in Sorrento and never near Pompeii (the ancient sight), Pompeii might be a good choice for your one night stop. There are hotels very close to the sight, and maybe someone will comment on those. If staying near Pompeii, you can use the Circumvesuviana to visit Sorrento (30 minutes - about 2.50 euro). You could even do dinner in Sorrento, which has many more choices that Pompeii area. Staying near Pompeii will also save you at least an hour of travel time. Instead of back-tracking to Naples, you can catch a local train from Pompei (the new city) to Salerno and connect to your train to Milazzo there. It's easy and inexpensive to go the approx one mile from the Pompeii area to the Pompei train station.

A lot of travelers don't realize that there are actually two train stations in Pompei. The one that we usually describe on this site is the Pompei Scavi stop on the Circumvesuviana train line. The second station is a Trenitalia train station in the actual city of Pompei. The two train stations are about a mile apart.
