Trains from Venice to Milan

My wife and I are taking a cruise in late August which arrives in Venice as the last port. We are probably going to fly back to the US from Milan. We would appreciate information about the trains from Venice to Milan, and coming off of a cruise ship, what makes the most sense logistically. I heard the train station in Venice isn't far from the cruise port. I have no idea where the train station in Milan is in relation to the MXP, the airport. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Yes you are right, in Venice. The station you want to research is Venezia Santa Lucia.

Are you planning to leave Venice and fly out of Malpensa on the same day?

If so, you might want to think about your timings carefully.

The Malpensa Express goes regularly from Milano Centrale (where your train from Venice is likely to arrive) to the airport, my memory is that the journey is just about an hour, can't remember if it is just over or just under.

Depending on which dock you'll be arriving at, it's a 1/2 mile max. to the train station in Venice.
From Venice, you'd be looking to take a 2:35 hour Frecciarossa train to Milan Central station where you'd catch the Malpensa Express train to the airport. See Trenitalia.com for details.

Assuming you dock at the main cruise area, it is a short, walkable (if you're not loaded with luggage) distance to the train station. You will walk a short distance to the "people mover" that will take you one stop to Piazzale Roma. Then a short walk across the bridge to the train station. You might want to go to googlemaps.com and enter something like "Piazzale Roma Venice Italy". They have excellent aerial views and street level views. Takes a bit of experimentation to get the hang of using it, but it is great for "walking" the route before you ever leave home. We've cruised from there and have spent time in Venice so let us know if you need specific info.

Since most of the flights to North America depart beginning mid-morning from MXP, you would need to book the flight back for the following day, unless of course you will spend a few days in Venice (I would).
There are some good hotels in Milan walking distance to the station, like the Berna (4) or Garda (3). There is also a subway station at the end of the block with trains to the center of Milan where the Duomo is located.
The Malpensa Express train takes 52 minutes to get to the airport from Milano Centrale. Two trains every hour and there are buses as well. Also, if you choose a hotel in the district near the Duomo, there are trains from a different station, Cadorna, that are faster (because they only make one stop on the way). 37 minutes to Malpensa and they run every 30 minutes.

Many thanks to Nigel, David, TC, and Sam for your useful information. We were thinking about traveling to Milan by train, to catch an 1115AM departure at the airport back to Miami. But after going over the information that you provided, doesn't seem we have enough time. We thought it might be interesting to view the countryside from a train. But we will probably fly to Madrid from Venice, and then onto the States. Our cruise ship will be arriving in Venice on Sept8,2016 at 800AM and will overnight there. That will give us 1 full day in Venice. We will debark the next morning. Is 1 day enough or is it worth it to get a hotel and spend an additional day in Venice? Or We would be open to suggestions on what to do in Venice. Again, thanks for your responses and providing us with what is involved to take the train.

Regards,
Phil

Of course, many will say that one day in Venice is not enough -- and it is not. We have done a lot of European cruises but we are never in a hurry to head home. I would spend a couple of extra nights in Venice, then a train to Milan for a two or three nights, then a train to Zurich for a couple nights and go home from Zurich, a nice convenient airport. The train to Zurich is a great, relaxing ride.

You original plan is not workable as you have concluded. The Milan airport is nearly in Switzerland. It is an hour bus or train ride from the Centrale train station. But Milan is a good location for a couple of days. It doesn't get the credit it deserves as a tourist site.

Hello Frank.
A couple of people that went to Venice were disappointed, as there wasn't much night life according to them. I'm going to these ports for the culture and history, and I'm sure Venice is fascinating. We get into Venice on a Thursday, and must debark from ship on Friday. I think I'll stay another day and return home on Saturday, as I have to be back to work on Monday. I would have loved to see Milan, but will have to be another trip, in which including Zurich sounds great. What was your favorite experience in Venice?

My favourite experience (among hundreds) continues to be taking a vaporetto across to little San Giorgio island (towards Giudecca from San Marco you'll go past it as you pass down the Giudecca Canal towards the the docks for cruise ships) and paying the monks a small number of Euro to take the lift/elevator up to the open top of their bell tower. Fabulous views just across the Basin to the Lion and S Marco new bell tower and everything else in S Marco. Look down and watch the ballet of all the boats and ships. The top of the tower is open air with just a wire screen, so the wind can blow through, and you are right next to the bells. When they wind up to strike, I suggest that you put your hands over your ears!!

No crowds, unlike at the tower across in S Marco, and the church is worth exploring. The vaporetto dock is just in front of the church, the tower at the back of the church.

I am with Nigel on this one. The D palace was very interesting and just scouting the side streets and with churches other buildings.

From you latest comments, if you are departing from Milan on Saturday, you need to overnight in Milan. I would come mid-day on Friday, stay need near the Centrale train station and catch the train to the airport on Saturday morning to match you flight time.

PS We have used Hotel Berna recommended by Julie (next posting down). It is a good choice and the subway is convenient for getting to the Doma.

I took a cruise in July that began and ended in Venice. Train travel between Venice and Milan is super easy! We flew from Dallas to Milan arriving Sunday, and stayed over at Hotel Berna (less than 5 minute walk from the train station), which I highly recommend. From Milan we took a one hour train to Lake Como for 3 days there. Then on to Venice by train which was 1 hour to Milan, then 3 hours to Venice. After our cruise we stayed 2 nights in Venice. We took a vaporetto to the bus station, and a bus to the airport (all included in our 24 hour vaporetto day pass). We bought our train tickets at the station, no need to stress about making a particular train.
While in Venice, we did not splurge on a gondola ride, mainly because I was going to be disappointed if I wasn't the best ride ever. Instead, I had seen a photo of the restaurant called Cip's Club (affiliated with the Hotel Cipriani). It's a covered patio on the edge of the canal directly across from St. Mark's. Gorgeous sunset, great food and drink, but pricey (worth it). Included in the price is the boat ride over and back, from a little dock they have near St. Mark's and you get a private ride whenever you need it.
Have a great trip.

Julie, thanks for contributing such great suggestions with the others. I have already printed everyone's input and will make use of it when we are in Venice. Our cruise starts in Athens, then goes to the Greek Isles, Mykonos, Patmos, Santorini,
Ephesus Turkey, Montenegro, Croatia ports Dubrovnik, Hvar, Opatija, and finally to Venice. We are so excited about this itinerary and would be open to any further suggestions for the trip.

thanks again to you and everyone else who responded

Your cruise sounds fantastic!!! I wonder if you have invested in the Rick Steves' Mediterranean Cruise Ports guide book? We had it and found it worthwhile, especially when touring on your own and making your way to/from the various ports.
In Athens, the bus from port to town takes almost an hour, but we did Acropolis and the Plaka in a day.
We loved Dubrovnik, and since we didn't think we would have time to get to the top of the tram (or whatever its called) we thought we may have to skip it, but our fantastic cab driver saved the day. He picked us up to take us to town and he offered to take us to the top of the tram and back down to town. We did it all in an hour, so no need to worry about the lines at the tram.
Our itinerary included Ephesus as well, but since the coup attempt occurred while we were on the ship, they cancelled that stop and took us to Crete that day instead. Since Turkey has a 3 month state of emergency in effect now, I would think maybe you won't make it to Ephesus.
Have a fantastic journey!!!
