Hi Steven. There is no direct high speed train all the way to Lyon. 1. There is a high speed train from Venice to Milan or Torino, then separate train (with changes) to Lyon. 2. You can fly - direct cheap flight on Easyjet (read details on baggage, etc charges) or Air France (more expensive). 3. Believe there is a night train leaves Venice 8PM arrive Lyon 8 am.
I normally prefer trains, but in this case iI might fly. Enjoy your trip!

The fastest daytime train route is Venice-Milan-Chambery-Lyon, departing at 07:50 and arriving at 17:20. You can take the Venice-Paris night train as far as Dijon and a regional train from there to Lyon. For detailed timetables go to the German Rail site. EasyJet's service between Venice and Lyon will begin tomorrow. However, flights will not be offered every day of the week.

Hi Steven...we are looking at exactly the same route: Venice to Lyon in April. We were hoping to rent a car but the gas prices will keep us from doing that and the train trip is to length so we are looking at easy jet. I'll keep watching this post to see if there are other suggestion. Have a great trip.
